The dust now swirling en masse in the Netherlands comes mainly from birch pollen grains, reports Weerplaza. Now it is in bloom and not only in the country, but also in neighboring countries.

People with hay fever know very well why their car is full of yellow dust. In the next few weeks, people with hay fever will be able to get ready again, because grass pollen is coming. The risk of hay fever complaints increases dramatically.

The herb spreads very strong allergenic pollen and causes complaints to more than two million Dutch people. Dry, sunny weather with a prevailing east wind increases the concentration of grass pollen in the air.

That predicts Weeronline. The first grass pollen was already observed last week by Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and Elkerliek Hospital. At the moment, according to Weeronline, no rain is expected and it is regularly warmer than normal with temperatures of 15-21 degrees. Normally it is 13-17 degrees.

The sunny climate stimulates the flowering of the grasses. And an east-northeast wind supplies an extra dose of pollen from Germany. It will probably get a little cooler around King’s Day, but even so, the local vibe will lessen.

The peak period of the grass pollen season is expected in the second half of May and June. After the peak, grass pollen still causes complaints in many people in July.

A few more weeks of birch pollen

Birches also produce a lot of pollen. Almost a million Dutch people are estimated to be sensitive to this pollen. The birch pollen season started in March, and starting April 5, large amounts of birch pollen were released into the air. The very warm weather in April made the birches bloom. The first birch trees now flourish in the south and east, but in the west the peak period continues slightly longer. According to the Wageningen University pollen planner, most birch trees have finished flowering in late April and the last birch pollen disappears from the sky in early May.

Crown confusion

Some hay fever complaints overlap with crown complaints. It is advisable to use hay fever medications in time to limit hay fever symptoms as much as possible to avoid confusion with crown complaints.

Tips Against Hay Fever

• Use your hay fever medications on time (preventively).
• Take a shower before bed to wash the pollen from your hair and keep your pillow clean.
• Wash your clothes regularly and do not dry them outdoors.
• Keep windows and doors closed or use pollen screens.
• Wear sunglasses. This makes pollen less easy on your eyes.
• Avoid physically strenuous outdoor activities.
