US Attorney General Barr (William Barr) stated that the Justice Department found no evidence of fraud that could overturn the results of the 2020 US general election.
“So far, we have not found large-scale fraud that could change the outcome of the elections,” Barr said.
Barr is the leader of federal law enforcement agencies and an important ally of current President Trump.
Trump has yet to accept the outcome of his defeat in the general election. His side has started lawsuits in many states, and some states have officially certified Biden as the winner.
Trump’s side alleges election fraud and fraud, but there is no real evidence to back it up. One of the widely circulated accusations is that there was “systematic fraud” in the general election, and hackers modified the voting machine program to falsify the election results in favor of Biden.
Barr told the Associated Press on December 1 (Tuesday) that the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security have investigated the allegation: “So far, we have not found any supporting evidence.”
Barr added: “The trend of using the criminal justice system as a default solution is growing, but people don’t like what they want the Justice Department to step in and ‘investigate’.
What does the Trump camp say?
Trump’s attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, responded to Barr in a joint statement that the Justice Department has not investigated the evidence of fraud they collected. But Trump’s team of lawyers has not released any hard evidence to back up the fraud allegations.
Last Sunday, Trump gave his first television interview after the election. He told Fox Television that he will continue to challenge the election results through legal channels. He also said that his mind “will not change for six months.”
“There is huge fraud,” Trump also said he intends to assign special prosecutors to investigate the election, and those officials must be appointed by Barr.
Why is Barr’s speech important?
Attorney General Barr has always been regarded as the most loyal member of Trump’s cabinet. Clearly, he has remained on the same page with the president on multiple controversial issues. For example, after the “Russia Gate” investigation, Barr publicly supported Trump and his campaign not to communicate with Russia in the 2016 general election.
After the 2020 election, Barr also authorized federal prosecutors to investigate allegations of voting violations, which was seen as “help” to Trump.
However, after about a month of investigation, Barr did not quietly wait for the state lawsuits to end one by one, but instead decided to publicly state at this time that no evidence of fraud was found that could overturn the election results. This is also a sign that Republicans, especially important figures in the Trump administration, are gradually keeping their distance from Trump.
Earlier, Chris Krebs, director of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said that the electoral system had no signs of being hacked and was subsequently fired by Trump. Trump is also involved in a war of words with the Republican governors of Arizona and Georgia.
Barr’s move may anger Trump and become the next target of the president’s ouster. Earlier news reports indicated that Trump was dissatisfied with Barr’s Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), believing they did not adequately support him after the election.
