The General Services Administration of the Federal Government of the United States wrote to Biden of the Democratic Party to inform him that the transition can officially begin. The US General Services Administration admitted in the letter that Biden was the “clear winner.”
US President Trump has accepted that Biden’s transition work can begin and suggested that federal agencies “do whatever it takes,” but still vowed to continue to challenge the election results.
Earlier, Biden’s victory in Michigan was officially certified, dealing a major blow to Trump.
The Biden team welcomes the beginning of the transition process. His statement read: “Today’s decision is a necessary step for us to begin responding to the challenges the country now faces, including controlling the new coronary pneumonia and recovering the economy.”
“This final decision is a decisive administrative action aimed at officially launching the handover process with the federal government.”
What did Trump say?
Trump tweeted that the U.S. General Services Administration will officially begin the president’s transfer of responsibility and notified Biden’s team that the U.S. General Services Administration will begin this process.
Emily Murphy, director of the US General Services Administration, said $ 6.3 million will be given to the Biden team as a transition fund to prepare for the transfer of power.
He said the relevant decision was made independently and that there was no pressure from the White House in the process.
Although Trump promised to continue to challenge the election results, he said: “However, in the best interest of our country, I suggest that Emily (Murphy) and her team do what they need to do regarding the initial transfer. I also told him to my team “.
Murphy, appointed by Trump, listed “the latest developments related to legal challenges and evidence of election results” in his letter to Biden to officially open the transfer.
Murphy said the White House did not pressure her during the decision. In his letter to Biden, he also said: “Obviously, I have not received any instructions to delay the decision.”
“However, I, my family and employees, and even my pets, have received threats from the Internet and phone calls to force me to make this decision prematurely.”
“Even in the face of thousands of threats, I remain committed to upholding the law.”
Politicians on both sides criticized her for not starting the transition process as soon as possible, which is usually a routine step between election day and the inauguration ceremony.
Murphy also missed the deadline for Democrats to ask him to file the delayed report in the House of Representatives on Monday (November 23).
Can Republicans take the pressure?
Trump’s Republican colleagues began to break their silence on the president’s transfer, with many people voicing their views on Monday.
Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee is about to retire and issued a statement saying Trump should “put the country first” and help Biden deliver the job.
Alexander added: “When you are in public office, people will remember the last thing you have to do.”
Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said: “The 2020 elections must end.”
Ohio Senator Rob Portman believes it is time for Biden now to receive a highly classified briefing on national security and the latest distribution plan for the new coronavirus vaccine.
At the same time, more than 160 business leaders also urged Murphy to immediately confirm Biden as president-elect in an open letter.
The open letter read: “The new administration is unable to obtain relevant resources and important information at this time, which threatens public safety and the US economy.”
What happened in Michigan?
Michigan election officials voted Monday to confirm that Biden won the state with more than 150,000 votes. The state election committee, made up of two Democrats and two Republicans, confirmed the results of the state elections with a 3-0 vote and one abstention.
The abstaining Republican election committee member, Norman Shinkle, suggested postponing confirmation of the result because the handling of hundreds of ballots in one county was flawed. But on the committee, his Republican colleague Aaron Van Langeveld said Monday that their work was “simple” and that they had no choice but to confirm the results.
Trump’s Republican allies have called for a two-week postponement of the certification of election results to review votes in a region dominated by Democrats.
Trump’s legal team said they will still challenge the results of the Michigan investigation. Trump’s legal advisor Jenna Ellis said certification is “just one step in the process.” He added: “It must be ensured that the final result of the American vote is fair and reasonable.”
But time is running out. On December 14, Biden’s victory is expected to be approved by the American Electoral College.
Trump’s other legal challenges
Trump and his allies raised legal challenges in several key states and suffered a series of losses.
In neighboring Wisconsin, a partial recount is underway at the request of the Trump campaign. Some election officials accused Trump supporters of obstructing the state’s reelection. They said that in some cases, Trump watchers are challenging every vote to deliberately delay the process.
In Pennsylvania, a Republican judge ruled on Saturday (November 21) that the Trump campaign claimed the state was trying to “deprive nearly seven million voters of their citizenship,” but there was no actual evidence.
Trump’s attorneys have appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Philadelphia Circuit. So far, Trump’s other legal efforts in the state have not changed Biden’s advantage of winning 80,000 votes.
The Trump campaign also called for a recount in Georgia. The earliest vote count confirmed Biden’s victory in the state.
