Zhejiang has been the country’s first small town farming pilot for 10 years. The cultivation of small cities gives super-large cities the corresponding management authority at the county level and allows them to plan and build in accordance with urban standards to create a regional center that can effectively take on the radiation of large and medium cities and effectively promote the development of the surrounding villages. This innovation has led a number of mega-cities like Longgang to transform into small towns. As of 2019, Zhejiang’s urbanization rate has reached 70%, which is 9.4 percentage points higher than the national level.

In April this year, when applying for the fourth batch of provincial-level small town cultivation pilot projects, Zhejiang made it clear for the first time that it should select the best among the qualified historical towns and economically strong towns to cultivate small towns in the town area. Good basic conditions, strong characteristics and advantages, a high level of population agglomeration and national influence … After several levels of selection, Huayuan Village was selected successfully.
16 kilometers from Dongyang City, Huayuan Village, an ancient village with a history of more than 690 years, is thriving: the village covers an area of 12 square kilometers, the permanent population exceeds 65,000, large residential buildings height, exhibition centers, large shopping centers, libraries and other “urban facilities” are available. It formed an industrial system dominated by biomedicine, new energies, new materials, redwood manufacturing, construction, and tourism. Last year, the village earned an operating income of 60.2 billion yuan, and the average annual income of the villagers was 135,000 yuan.
