OnePlus 8 differs from 8 Pro
OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are the manufacturer’s latest top devices and keep track of last year’s 7T and 7T Pro. At first glance, the 8 and 8 Pro are very similar, and they also share important specs. Both phones work, for example, they have a Snapdragon 865 processor, they are compatible with 5G and they work with Android 10. However, there are also enough differences. We explain the main ones.

1. Design
Place the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro next to each other and the first difference is immediately apparent. The Pro variant is more robust, because it has a larger screen. More on that in a moment.
The 8 Pro measures 165.3 by 74.4 millimeters, compared to 160.2 by 72.9 millimeters in the case of the 8. At 8.5 millimeters, the Pro edition is also slightly thicker than the 8 (exactly 8 millimeters thick) It is also heavier: 199 versus 180 grams. While those nineteen grams in the absolute sense aren’t many, the 8 Pro is noticeably heavier.
In terms of colors, there are also differences. The 8 and 8 Pro appear in black and green, and the 8 also comes as Interstellar Glow (white with a slight gradient). The 8 Pro lacks this color and offers ultramarine blue (dark blue) as a third option.
A less obvious difference is inside. When the OnePlus 8 is waterproof and dustproof according to the manufacturer, the 8 Pro is the only one with IP68 certification. The device is independently certified for water and dust resistance and offers, at least on paper, more security than the regular OnePlus 8.
2. Screen
We just mentioned it: the 8 Pro’s screen is larger than the 8’s. No wonder, because OnePlus Pro phones have had a bigger screen from the start. With its 6.78-inch screen, the 8 Pro is the largest OnePlus smartphone to date. The 8 features a 6.55-inch screen, the same size as last year’s 7T. Both the 8 and 8 Pro cannot be operated with one hand. If you are looking for the biggest smartphone for movies and games, you can go to the 8 Pro.
Not only the screen size is different. The 8 Pro also has a screen with a higher refresh rate. The screen updates 120 times per second and is therefore called a 120Hz screen. OnePlus 8 uses a 90Hz display, which is also found in the 7 Pro and 7T series. The 120Hz screen looks a bit softer than the 90Hz screen. You especially notice this when you play streamlined games and read text, but also when you browse apps and watch animations.
Because the screen is updated more frequently, the power consumption is higher. That’s a point of attention for the 8 Pro. You can go back to 60Hz in settings for a less uniform image, but longer battery life.
Another difference is that the OnePlus 8 Pro’s screen can display a maximum resolution of 3168 by 1440 pixels, or QHD. The normal 8 shows a maximum of 2400 by 1080 pixels (full-HD). The 8 Pro’s display therefore looks sharper, but it also consumes more power at that resolution. Therefore, the setup screen also allows you to switch to Full-HD.
3. Cameras
The 8 and 8 Pro are also different in the camera area. No wonder, as with OnePlus phones from last year. On the back of the 8 Pro is a 48-megapixel main camera, the latest Sony IMX689 sensor.
It is accompanied by a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens (three times hybrid zoom), and a 5-megapixel color filter camera. The latest sensor is new to a OnePlus phone and allows you to apply all sorts of Instagram-like effects from the camera app before taking a photo.
The OnePlus 8 has a less good 48 megapixel camera, just like in the 7 and 7T series. There’s also a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens, though it has a relatively small field of view of 116 degrees. The field of view of the wide-angle camera on the 8 Pro is 120 degrees, which means it adjusts more closely to the image.
The third camera on the OnePlus 8 is a 2 megapixel macro camera for taking close-up photos. The 7T’s zoom lens has been dropped, according to OnePlus, because users put more value on a dedicated macro camera.
This is surprising, because you don’t necessarily need a macro camera for a macro photo. The 7T Pro and 8 Pro take macro photos through the wide-angle lens and that works, at least on the 7T Pro, excellent. We suspect that the omission of the zoom on the 8 is done primarily to lower the price and make the 8 Pro more unique. Both smartphones also have a 16 megapixel selfie camera in a hole in the upper left corner of the screen.
4. Battery and charge
The larger screen of the OnePlus 8 Pro consumes more power than the screen of the 8, so the Pro version has a larger battery. The capacity is 4510 mAh, compared to 4300 mAh on the 8. It is not a big difference and therefore the battery life of smartphones is expected to be comparable.
One big difference between the two devices is that OnePlus 8 Pro supports wireless charging. This is also the first time for OnePlus phones.
The 8 Pro can be wirelessly charged with up to 30 watts using OnePlus’ own wireless charging station. You have to buy this separately for 69.95 euros. You can also use a different wireless Qi charger, but then the smartphone will charge considerably slower. Read more about the OnePlus wireless charger here.
Both devices also come with a 30-watt deformation charging USB-C plug, which you may meet from the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro.
5. OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 differ in price
The OnePlus 8 Pro and the smaller and less versatile OnePlus 8 therefore differ in important ways. You can see that in the price.
