The Taijiquan application was successful, Beijing News spoke with the beneficiary of Taijiquan’s birthplace and the successor of Chen’s Taijiquan.

The ultimate goal of the app is to make more people love Tai Chi.

On the night of December 17 Beijing time, China’s declared “Tai Chi” was included on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Human Cultural Heritage, raising concern.

Public information shows that Tai Chi originated in Chenjiagou, Wen County, Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, with a history of more than 300 years.

How to prepare for the Taijiquan application? In light of the above doubts about the Ma Baoguo incident, the “Hunyuan Xingyi Taijiquan master”, how did the “Taijiquan community” comment? The Beijing News successively interviewed Yan Shuangjun, Wenxian CPPCC Vice Chairman and former Vice Chairman of the Wenxian Taijiquan Human Intangible Cultural Heritage Declaration, and Chen Bin, the twelfth-generation successor of Chen Taijiquan.

Yan Shuangjun: The spread of Tai Chi depends on the communication of the language

The Beijing News: When did Taijiquan request a legacy?

Yan Shuangjun: In May 2006, Tai Chi was included in the National Intangible Heritage List. In September 2008, I received a notice and was transferred to Jiaozuo City to participate in the Tai Chi application for the “List of Representative Works of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” Time was tight at the time, and the Henan Province Department of Culture also sent experts to help us analyze and judge, complete the text of the declaration, and prepare to collect the application materials. We went to Beijing to accept the expert guide from the Ministry of Culture.

Beijing News: At that time, how was the plan for heritage enforcement prepared?

Yan Shuangjun: The plan has been revised and improved too many times. If the declaration was not approved in the previous year, and the declaration could not be made within four years, we felt that time was rushed and we would withdraw the declaration first.

In 2009, we reviewed the text in detail and re-produced a promotional video of the registration, ready to testify again. But that year there were new regulations, a country can only report two articles and Tai Chi was not included. Subsequently, the heritage application rules changed again: a country can only apply for one project per year and one project for the next two years.

Later, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism included Taijiquan in the application work for the 2019 Representative List of Human Intangible Cultural Heritage and commissioned the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center to complete the relevant materials for the Taijiquan application. run by the Henan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. Review and report to UNESCO in time.

The environment right now is different than it was 10 years ago. In 2006, Chen-style Taijiquan and Yang-style Taijiquan were included in the National Intangible Heritage List. In 2008, Wu-style Taijiquan was included on the list. In 2014, He-style Taijiquan, Wu-style Taijiquan, Li-style Taijiquan, and Wang Qihe were included in the list. Tai Chi is also included in the list. In 2018, we united seven communities (genders) to jointly apply for the legacy.

Over the past 10 years, the United Nations requirements and the submission of the application text have constantly changed, and we have continued to supplement and improve the application materials in accordance with the requirements.

Henan Taijiquan Academy is under construction to cultivate talents

Beijing News: Wenxian County is known as the birthplace of Taijiquan. After announcing the success of the app, how has the local response been?

Yan Shuangjun: Everyone is very happy and feels well deserved. A celebration organized by all.

Beijing News: The success of the heritage application, what changes do you think Wen County will bring?

Yan Shuangjun: The most obvious thing is to promote the development of cultural tourism. In addition, the production of Tai Chi clothing, swords, pistols, swords and halberds used in the practice of Tai Chi can also promote the development of clothing and other industries.

The Beijing News: After successfully applying for a legacy, how do you continue to develop Tai Chi?

Yan Shuangjun: Wen County is building a professional undergraduate school and university for Taijiquan in order to cultivate high-quality Taijiquan coaches and talents. We are ready for this.

The wider the dissemination of Taijiquan, the higher the requirements for teachers, and the dissemination of Taijiquan must depend on linguistic communication. Only through posture, sometimes it is not possible to understand the mystery. Wen County is building the Henan Taijiquan Academy. The first phase of the project is expected to cover 512 mu of land.

In addition, Jiaozuo excavated, collected and classified historical documents and precious historical materials related to Taijiquan, and established a Taijiquan database.

The Beijing News: What are your suggestions for promoting Tai Chi in the world in the future?

Yan Shuangjun: Using precise language to communicate and explain Tai Chi, there are still great obstacles. I hope that the heirs of Taijiquan will also learn other languages in the future and express the meaning of Chinese in precise foreign languages. I also expect professional departments to do research on these and do standard translations, just like dictionaries.

The application is not the end. The ultimate goal of the app is to make more people understand, recognize and love Tai Chi and spread Tai Chi, so that Tai Chi can serve the health of more people and the harmonious development of society.

Chen Bin: Administration should be strengthened to standardize the development of Taijiquan

Tai chi carries the tai chi culture

Beijing News: When did you learn Tai Chi? How many apprentices have you received now?

Chen Bin: Taijiquan originated from Chenjiagou Town, Wen County, Henan Province. I am from Chenjiagou. I have been learning Taijiquan from my father Chen Zhenglei since I was 5 years old. He is the representative national heir of Taijiquan. My parenting experience is the same as that of my peers, I used my free time to practice Taijiquan since I was a child, instead of giving up my studies to inherit family learning. Since I first opened the door to accept disciples in 2015, I have now accepted three batches of more than 30 people, including three foreigners. They are martial arts enthusiasts and often come to Henan to study and also invite me to lecture abroad.

Beijing News: How to become heir to Taijiquan?

Chen Bin: After Taijiquan became a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006, heirs must report it level by level, from county level to city level, to provincial and national levels. Provincial heirs declare at the national level, there are clear requirements, there must be more than 6 generations of clear master-inheritance relationship. Before that, for hundreds of years in the family, representative characters will emerge in each generation. Heirs must comprehensively consider the individual’s technical level, comprehensive strength, and broad social cognition.

Beijing News: The Seven Communities of Chen-style Taijiquan, He-style Taijiquan, Yang-style Taijiquan, Wu-style Taijiquan, Wu-style Taijiquan, Li-style Taijiquan, Wang Qi and Taijiquan (Gender), what is the difference?

Chen Bin: Since Taijiquan was created in Chenjiagou village in the mid-17th century, many schools have developed with names of other surnames or names based on Chen Taijiquan. There are more than 80 sets of martial arts, weapon routines, and more than 20 kinds of hand pushing method.

In the development process, some genres simplified their actions and removed some technical actions. Although the routines and movements are different, they are always the same. Everyone must respect the basic principles and principles of Taijiquan.

Beijing News: Besides the competitive nature, what other content do you understand about Tai Chi?

Chen Bin: Tai Chi carries the Tai Chi culture and inherits the cultural genes of the Chinese nation. Taijiquan contains the cycle of yin and yang, the traditional Chinese philosophy of the harmony of man and nature, and the concept of health preservation, which enrich people’s understanding of the laws of the universe, nature and the body. human.

For example, the cycle of yin and yang represents the dialectical relationship between the two apparently opposite, but in fact unified. Tai Chi also embodies this concept, as one that requires the combination of stiffness and smoothness, alternating speed and slowness, smooth opening and closing of the hands, and a clear distinction between the real and the virtual in the legs.

It is recommended to strengthen management and allow Taijiquan to develop in a standardized way

Beijing News: How can people of different ages benefit from Tai Chi?

Chen Bin: Taijiquan practitioners are spread across the country and are “fanatics in circles” abroad. It has become widely popular. In the past, practitioners spread their promotion by word of mouth. After strengthening their body, they will share it with their family and friends. After prolonged practice, many groups of middle-aged and elderly people experience physical well-being and health.

Today, scientific research institutions use modern biomedicine to interpret the health preservation mechanism and effects of Taijiquan and study its enhancement to the respiratory system, the digestive system, and the nervous system.

Beijing News: Ma Baoguo, who previously claimed to be the “master of Hunyuan Xingyi Taijiquan,” has drawn attention. Have you noticed this?

Chen Bin: In recent years, there have actually been some incidents of using Tai Chi to sensationalize. Now too many practitioners and amateurs have started their schools. Chaos is interest-driven. Anyone with a one-and-a-half move can have a market and can fool people. This type of incident can cause the outside world to misinterpret Tai Chi.

The Beijing News: What do you think is the importance of the successful application of Taijiquan and how to promote its better development in the future?

Chen Bin: The application of cultural heritage has successfully expanded the influence of Tai Chi. As a cultural symbol with Chinese elements, I believe that Tai Chi can be further promoted in the next step. I hope that more people can share Tai Chi and share health.

In addition, I also suggest that the competent authorities increase management efforts to standardize the development of Tai Chi.
