Teen sensation Coco Gauff says she was dealing with depression not too long ago. The American tennis talent had to regain his pleasure in tennis, but now he feels stronger than ever.
“All my life I’ve accomplished things at a very young age and that caused some enthusiasm that I wasn’t happy with. It was around 2017/2018 that I didn’t know if I really wanted to do this,” 16-year-old Gauff writes on Instagram. Behind the racket.

Gauff has been known as a great tennis talent, but he finally made his way in 2019. He was the youngest qualifier to reach the main Wimbledon tournament and even reached the eighth final in London, thanks in part to a historic victory over her idol Venus Williams.

“I felt lost and confused”
In the months that followed, Gauff, then fifteen, reached the third round of the US Open and won the first WTA title in Linz since his early career. In the meantime, the American can call himself number 52 in the world, although he realizes that things could have turned out quite differently.
“I felt lost and confused during my depression,” recalls Gauff. “I cried and thought a lot and even considered not playing tennis for a year. It is a good thing that I did not. Now I feel stronger than before my depression and I know myself much better.”
Gauff continued his solid performance in 2019 earlier this year by reaching the eighth final of the Australian Open, where he only had to bow to subsequent winner Sofia Kenin after three sets. It is not yet known when Gauff can take action again, because the tennis season has stopped for the time being.
