“Shangganling is famous for long-distance earthquake, lonely hero Rongma Yifang”, in Lin Bingyuan’s house, a retired painting retreat in Nanchong, Sichuan, a plaque on the wall shines in the sun, recounting the past and glory of the old man.
Lin Bingyuan, a native of Nanchong, Sichuan, was born in 1932. He joined the Chinese People’s Volunteers in March 1951 and entered North Korea in September of the same year. At the Battle of Shangganling, Lin Bingyuan eliminated more than 140 enemies, and the volunteer army awarded him the title of “second-level combat hero” and recorded special merits.
“At that time, what I was thinking about was fighting more enemies, but I didn’t expect to do meritorious service,” Lin Bingyuan said.
On October 30, 1952, the volunteers began fighting after experiencing a difficult fight in the tunnel at Shangganling. On the night of the 31st, Lin Bingyuan’s troops were ordered to retake position number 2 of 597.9 Heights.
Lin Bingyuan was tasked with blowing up the wire fence to clear obstacles for the troops behind. Under the cover of our artillery fire, Lin Bingyuan and his comrades groped for the enemy’s position …
“On the battlefield, volunteers often followed the artillery fire and gave the enemy no respite. The enemy waited for the end of their artillery fire before starting to attack,” recalled Lin Bingyuan.
After the passage was opened, the volunteer soldiers fought fiercely, seriously wounding the vitality of the enemy and finally winning the No. 2 position.
“The strategic position of Position 2 is important. The enemy is ready to surrender. They launched intense attacks and shots at Position 2. Our army suffered heavy casualties.” Lin Bingyuan said, “On the night of November 4, there were only ten left in the tunnel. Some people.”
“The enemy also worked hard. To destroy us, they even bombarded their own people.” The next morning, Lin Bingyuan and three slightly injured men were ordered to stand on the ground. When they were fighting the enemy, a cannonball exploded from the crowd. Lin Bingyuan’s three comrades died.
Soon, the enemy began to attack the high ground guarded only by Lin Bingyuan. Lin Bingyuan quietly hid in a cannonball pit on the top of the mountain. Right now, he only had two grenades left on his body. He sat down and was ready to die with the enemy.
At the moment of the moment, two companions from the other side of the crater halfway up the mountain came to support with ammunition. They participated in a life and death contest with the enemy.
In the hail of bullets, a comrade in arms was hit by a bullet and killed on the spot.
“Instead of staying here forever, you better run out and have a good time.” Lin Bingyuan decided to attack.
Under the cover of another comrade in arms, Lin Bingyuan, who was strapped down with ammunition, leapt out of the crater through the smoke from a grenade blast and launched a surprise attack. The enemy was suddenly confused and retreated one after another.
Lin Bingyuan worked hard, chasing and fighting, the more he fought, the more courageous he was. Volunteers also reinforced artillery support.
Lin Bingyuan defended his position and completed the task gloriously. His actions quickly spread to the front and rear, greatly boosting morale.
Ask him where his courage comes from. Lin Bingyuan said: “On the battlefield, you have to hurry, because you are afraid that you cannot win the battle. You can destroy the enemy without fear of death, and you can save yourself by destroying the enemy.”
After returning from North Korea, Lin Bingyuan has always maintained the true qualities and fine style of a revolutionary soldier and contributed to the modernization of the army and the local economic construction in his post. After retiring, he was actively involved in social welfare businesses, did hero reporting for the army and local units, and went to schools and communities for traditional revolutionary education.
Currently, 88-year-old Lin Bingyuan still maintains two habits: one is to watch the news broadcast and “Reference News” every day, and the other is to walk 10,000 steps every day. “Keep your mental and physical strength in the best condition to make more contributions to society,” Lin Bingyuan said.
