Schism in DENK – Locals, youth movement and Tunahan Kuzu join Farid Azarkan

Local party and youth movement departments unite behind chairman of DENK’s Farid Azarkan group. He wants the party’s board of directors to step down to get out of the crisis at the party. DENK’s two founders, MPs Tunahan Kuzu and Selçuk Özturk, are involved in a bitter fight. Until last month, Kuzu was the political leader of DENK and Özturk remains chairman of the board.

It recently became clear that an extramarital affair was the impetus for Kuzu to resign. He accuses party member Öztürk of having abused the issue. He accuses him of “political brotherhood”.

Azarkan hoped to put out the fire this week by replacing the board, including Özturk, with a temporary board. The board released a statement early Friday not to accept this. He wants to resolve the matter during the general membership meeting on June 6.

The board also wants to start an independent investigation into the conflict. According to Azarkan, that is not possible because Öztürk himself is involved in the fight.
