The head of the new corona pneumonia vaccine in the United States said that “the light is already at the end of the tunnel.”
Moncef Slaoui said he hopes the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will give the green light for a vaccine when it meets this week.
But he also said that in order for life to return to normal before the end of spring, Americans must still observe security measures.
The United States has recorded a record number of infections in recent days and the number of daily deaths has exceeded 2,000.
The new wave of rising numbers has put heavy pressure on US hospitals and, since December 6, most areas of California have also started implementing new closure restrictions.
The accompanying vaccine may soon be approved, and states in the United States are also preparing to distribute the vaccine. The US Food and Drug Administration will meet on Thursday to discuss the UK-approved Pfizer vaccine, and approval of the vaccine produced by Moderna will also be discussed on December 17.
“What the FDA is doing is a very important and far-reaching process,” Sloy told CBS on Sunday.
Sloy is the head of Operation Warp Speed, the federal government’s vaccine distribution program.
“Based on the data I understand, I hope the FDA will make a positive decision. But of course, it is up to them,” he said.
“The first batch of vaccines will be issued the day after the vaccine is approved.”
The UK approved the large-scale use of the Pfizer vaccine last week and will begin its largest vaccination work to date from this Thursday.
“There is a lot of hope ahead”
Once approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States, the vaccine is expected to be used first for one million medical workers and three million older people living in nursing homes in the United States. It will be up to the states to decide which group should get the vaccine first.
“I think we can start to see some effects in the most susceptible people in January or February,” Sloy told CBS.
“But from the perspective of the entire population, if we want our lives to begin to return to normal, we think it is April or May.”
“That is why it is very important that everyone believes in the fact that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, in order to gain motivation to keep wearing masks, keep our distance, wash our hands … to make sure that we wait until spring to benefit from the vaccine. “
Although he made his appeal, many Americans have not followed the epidemic prevention and safety guidelines despite the increasing number of cases.
Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House COVID-19 Task Force, criticized the Trump administration for ignoring the guidelines and spreading “myths” about the epidemic.
“I heard community members repeating those things like parrots, repeating that masks don’t work, repeating that we should move in the direction of herd immunity,” he told NBC on Sunday.
“I want to be honest with Americans that vaccines are important, but they cannot help us avoid the increased risk of current cases,” she said.
“Only we can save ourselves from the current growing momentum.”
“Get the plan right”
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, about 14.6 million people in the United States have been infected with the new crown and 281,234 people have died as a result. These two figures are the highest figures of any country in the world.
Last Saturday, the United States registered a new record of confirmed cases for the third day in a row, and the number of new cases reached 230,000 in 24 hours.
As hospitals fill up, new closure policies will be implemented in South, Downtown and San Francisco beginning the night of Dec. 6. These policies can be implemented in other parts of the state in a few days.
California hopes to use these measures to slow the spread of the virus before a vaccine can be widely promoted.
US President-elect Joe Biden said last week that he has yet to see the detailed plans of the Trump administration for the distribution of vaccines in different states.
But Sloy raised a different opinion on this point in an interview with CBS. He said he “hopes” to meet with Biden this week to discuss promotional work, “because things have actually been planned very appropriately.”
