On the 60th anniversary of the completion of the Miyun Reservoir, Secretary General Xi Jinping responded to the people who built and guarded the Miyun Reservoir, saying that the Miyun Reservoir was built to prevent flooding and waterlogging. It is now a major source of surface drinking water and a strategic reservoir of water resources in Beijing. The base has become a priceless treasure.
Governing the country is like ruling the water, and ruling the country first rules the water. Great rivers have always been closely related to the rise and fall of human civilization. A history of Chinese civilization is a history of continuous struggle against floods and droughts. It gave rise to the Chinese ideal of peace and quiet and determined that water control has become an important part of the country’s governance.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, people looked forward to remedying the Chaobai River and eradicating the Haihe River. In the Haihe River system, the Chaohe River has “strong water and sounds like a tide”; the Baihe River has “white sand on both banks and no grass grows.” The two rivers merge with the often flooded Chaobai River in Miyun, known as the “Xiaoyao River at the bottom of the straw.”
At the end of June 1958, the Central Party Committee and the State Council made the decision to build the Miyun Reservoir. On September 1, 1960, the Miyun Reservoir was successfully completed, performing the water conservancy miracle that blocked the flood in one year and was completed in two years.
As of 2019, the Miyun Reservoir has intercepted more than 1000 cubic meters per second at the peak of flooding for more than 30 times, and the accumulated area of flooded land has been reduced by 32.11 million mu.
As the largest water conservation project in North China, the Miyun Reservoir is an important part of Comrade Mao Zedong’s action to “remove the Haihe River”, witnessing the eradication of the Haihe River system and the transformation of the Haihe River.

Don’t forget to dig a well
From participating in the battle to build the Miyun Reservoir, to protecting the reservoir, closing factories and mines, for 60 years, the people of Miyun have made significant contributions to improving the ecological environment of the capital.
Shallow mountains flow from Pinghu Lake, visible reservoir and unsatisfying nostalgia. The people of Miyun “put their houses for the field”, the strong men broke their arms and said goodbye to industrial and mining companies such as chemical plants, fertilizer plants and cement plants.
Protecting the water of life in the capital does not necessarily restrict development. Miyun has embarked on a green development path from “I want to conserve water” to “I want to conserve water.”
Secretary-General Xi Jinping pointed out that mountains, rivers, forests, lakes and lakes are a community of life. The blood of man is in the field, the life line of the field is in the water, the life line of the water is in the mountains, the life line of the mountains is in the ground, and the life line of the soil is in the trees.
The construction of water conservancy forests has increased Miyun’s forest cover rate by more than 70%. In addition to the “Miyun Agriculture” brand, the blue sky, clear water, green mountains and clean air have created a vibrant ecotourism.
Taking advantage of the good mountains and rivers, the days of the Miyun people have become more prosperous. Practice has shown that protecting the environment does not hamper economic development, but leaves room for new kinetic energy.

Together to protect the green waters and mountains of the homeland
Secretary-General Xi Jinping called the Miyun Reservoir an invaluable treasure.
With the development of the economy and society, the water shortage has become the shortest board in the development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. The results of the survey and evaluation of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment show that the amount of water resources per capita in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is only 1/9 of the national average. Since 2000, with the exception of a few years, the intensity of water resource development and utilization has exceeded 100%, far exceeding the internationally accepted safe limit for the development and utilization of water resources. Approximately 70% of rivers have a dry flow phenomenon throughout the year.
China has more water in the south and less water in the north. It has been the dream of generations to transfer water through river basins and optimize resource allocation. In 2014, with water flowing in from the south and traveling thousands of miles north, the water storage capacity of the Miyun Reservoir continued to increase.
During the last five years since the first phase of the Middle Route of the South to North Water Diversion Project was inaugurated, more than 450 million cubic meters of water from the south have been sent to the Miyun Reservoir through the storage project .
The transfer of water through the river basins reappeared in the powerful waters of the dry bed of the Beijing River. In 2020, the volume of water from the Yongding River spring replenishment and the Yellow River water diversion will also reach the highest level in the same period in the past. For the first time in 40 years, the Yongding River Mountain Gorge section experienced continuous flow, and some springs in Mentougou District began to resurface after 30 years of stopping spraying.
Secretary General Xi Jinping emphasized in his letter to Miyun villagers that the construction of ecological conservation areas should be strengthened, the ecological compensation mechanism should be improved, and the green waters and mountains of the homeland should be protected together. .
The green waters and mountains of the homeland are indivisible. Chaohe River originated from Fengning, Hebei, Baihe River originated from Guyuan, Hebei; Yongding River, Daqing River, Ziya River, Zhangweinan Canal originated from Shanxi.
From the Yangtze River to the Yellow River, from the Fen River to the Huai River, from the Baiyangdian to the Miyun Reservoir, Secretary-General Xi Jinping’s heart is filled with all the rivers connected by blood in the motherland.

The Miyun reservoir is like a mirror, illuminating history and the future; The pearl of Yanshan shines in the crown of the capital of a great country. In the past, two out of three glasses of water in Beijing were Miyun water; Today, out of every ten glasses of water in Beijing, seven of them are Yangtze River water.
A flower, a world, drip a China. The waters of the Yellow River, the Haihe River, the Huaihe River, and the Yangtze River merge in the same pulse of the descendants of Yan and Huang.
