After much research, in 2010, various village cadres found that the large hazelnut fruit industry in Liaoning Province was suitable for the natural conditions of Liuhe County. That year, they introduced 600 hazelnuts in the full period of fruit production for the test planting.
Dai Zhenwu used the Yuanfeng Agricultural and Forest Products Professional Cooperative, originally established in the village, to organize everyone to join the ranks of hazelnut cultivation. “Hazel is a species of tree with a shallow root system. The root system is distributed in a fan shape on the surface. It has a great capacity to fix the soil and water. It takes 5 years for hazelnuts to enter the full fruiting period. To help villagers build trust, Dai Zhenwu often takes everyone to see successful cases and learn advanced technologies. After several years of planting and cultivation, large areas of arid hills and wastelands in Shaoguo village have been repainted green, and the hazelnut industry has also flourished.
At present, more than 70% of the village farmers have joined the cooperative and from the hazelnut industry alone they can earn an average income of more than 30,000 yuan per household per year. The hazelnut plantation area in Shaoguo village has also grown from the first 1,200 mu to 5,670 mu, which has also led the city to develop more than 28,000 mu hazelnut orchards, forming characteristic agricultural products of the region.
To solve the difficult and expensive problem of labor in the orchards, Dai Zhenwu, which has no mechanical or electrical base, became a “mechanic” and led the village electricians and welders to study agricultural machinery suitable for orchards. sloping. After 4 years of hard work, he successfully developed a comprehensive mountain handling machine capable of weeding, fertilizing and drug spraying, and named it “Fruit Hazel Bull”.
“The work efficiency of a ‘fruit hazelnut cow’ can exceed 15 people weeding at the same time, 10 people fertilizing and 20 people loading, which can save more than one million yuan in labor costs per year,” he said Dai Zhenwu.
Villager Sun Hongbin has a deep understanding of the strength of the “hazelnut fruit cow.” Originally dependent on growing corn and working to earn money, this year he hired 147 mu of land to grow hazelnuts. “In the first year, I made a net profit of more than 30,000 yuan, and the ‘fruit hazelnut cow’ helped me save a lot of money,” he said.
The hazelnut forests of the mountains not only bring considerable economic benefits, but also make the still green and barren hills a valuable tourist resource. In recent years, Shaoguo Village has attracted large numbers of tourists to sightseeing by holding hazelnut gathering festivals and other activities.
“To sum it up in one sentence, it’s about ‘giving back 10,000 acres of barren hills and hiding rich green water and green mountains,'” Dai Zhenwu said with a smile.
In the last few days, the harvesting and selling of hazelnuts has almost ended. Dai Zhenwu’s most active is working with workers on the construction site in the west of the town. The smart cut seedling base being built here has taken shape. Once completed, the seedlings can be unified into varieties, formed within a year of planting, and turned into a garden in the same year. “After the greenhouse is completed, it is estimated that up to 3 million seedlings will be grown each year, which is another considerable income based on the market price of 4 yuan per plant,” Dai Zhenwu said.
