Groenewegen now delivers messages: “But keep hope for the cycling season” | NOW

Those who request food these days can receive it in a four-time Tour de France winner. Dylan Groenewegen is busy delivering groceries during this time of crisis, while the best Jumbo-Visma sprinter is waiting for the cycling season to resume.

Groenewegen offers on its own initiative to elderly people and care providers who have indicated through Bezorgdezorg.nl that they cannot currently go to the supermarket themselves. “That keeps me a little busy,” says the Amsterdammer-born smiling to NU.nl.

“Training is the most important thing to keep fit, but I asked my team if I could do something else. The purchases are very satisfying. I usually focus on winning, now I do this.”

It is not the case that Groenewegen is on the road daily with boxes of forty kilos. “But every once in a while I deliver small groceries or dinners. I can do it by bike. People love it and are very grateful.”

“Victories ease the pain a little”

In addition to his “part-time job” as a shopping courier, Groenewegen is primarily engaged in training during the crown crisis, both outdoors and at home. The Jumbo-Visma rider, like many other top athletes, does not find the situation mentally easy, but can supervise it.

“It is good that he has already won three victories this season, which eases the pain a bit,” said the sprinter, who won two stages on the Tour de Valencia in February and one on the Tour of the United Arab Emirates.

“Also, as a cyclist, I can still train outside and the weather is nice. That also makes a difference. I have to pedal alone and that’s boring, but I can’t complain. Also, I have everything at home for strength training. I have than taking it as it is, there are worse things. “

‘Virtual pricing support’

Groenewegen wants to be completely ready if the cycling season resumes later this year. He believes that a large number of races can be driven in 2020.

“Although that may be based more on hope,” he admits. “It certainly won’t work in the next two or three months, but maybe after that. It will be difficult to say what the schedule will be like at that time. A lot will have to happen in a short time.”

Several runners are focusing on digital races pending a possible continuation of the season. Is a virtual sprint stage something for Groenewegen? “I’m definitely behind it. Running on the Tacx (his bike trainer, ed.) Is getting a little strange, because on the road I can choose my line. But I think I’ll be there when the time comes,” he says.

“You have to stay a bit in the image, that is also important for the sponsors. For a sponsor, this time of crisis is more difficult than for others. Fortunately, in Jumbo-Visma we don’t notice much at the moment.”
