Fu Gaoyi was born in 1930 and speaks Chinese and Japanese. He is an expert on China and Japan and one of the famous “Masters of China” in the United States. He was director of the Fairbank Center for East Asian Studies at Harvard University.

Fu Gaoyi obtained a doctorate in sociology from Harvard University in 1958 and then did two years of research in Japan. He served as an assistant professor at Yale University from 1960 to 1961.
