Former goalkeeper Peter Bonetti passed away Sunday after a long illness. The Englishman, who played over seven hundred games for Chelsea, was 78 years old.

Bonetti played for Chelsea from 1960 to 1979, except in 1975, when he defended the goal of the St. Louis stars in the United States.

In twenty seasons for Chelsea, ‘The Cat’ played no fewer than 729 official games. With that, he just has to tolerate record holder Ron Harris above him in the ranking with most matches for the English club. John Terry is number three on the list with 717 duels.

Chelsea have reacted with dismay to the death of the former goalkeeper. “Bonetti was a superstar in the 1960s and 1970s. The cat, as he was commonly known, rocked the waves among many misfits in Chelsea’s golden age,” the Blues write on the website.

Bonetti was part of the English team of the World Cup in 1966.

With Chelsea, Bonetti won the UEFA Cup in 1971. He also captured the FA Cup (1970) and the League Cup (1965) with the Londoners.

Bonetti was also under the bar for the English national team seven times. In 1966 he was part of the team that became world champion in his own country, but he did not play for a minute.

After his second stint at Chelsea, he began working as a postman and played a few more games for Scottish Dundee United (1979) and English Woking (1986). After his playing career, he was also a goalkeeping coach with, among others, the English national team, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Manchester City.
