The US state of Georgia holds elections for the Senate on Tuesday (January 5). The outcome will determine whether President-elect Biden’s Democratic Party can take control of the Senate.
This election began voting in mid-December, and the outcome of the vote is crucial to what Biden of the Democratic Party can accomplish during the next term of the presidency.
This can be confusing for some people. Weren’t the Senate elections held in November last year? Why did Georgia do it again?
It turns out that, according to Georgia regulations, candidates must get more than 50% of the votes to be elected, and no one in the November elections got more than half the votes.
Therefore, the two groups of Republican and Democratic candidates must go through a second round of voting to determine who can be elected.
Who is the candidate of the two parties?
Georgia’s two current senators are Republicans and face challenges from Democratic candidates.
Senator David Perdue, 70, and Jon Ossoff, 33
Republican Perdue has served as a senator from Georgia since 2015. He was the CEO of Reebok Sporting Goods and a Trump supporter. Perdue is now being evaluated to trade in stocks worth millions, but he denies any wrongdoing.
Democratic rookie Osoff was once an aide to Democratic Congressman Hank Johnson and later ran a documentary media company. He used his professional media skills during the campaign, filming campaign videos and sharing them on social media.
Kelly Loeffler, 50, and Raphael Warnock, 51
Republican Loffler only served as Georgia Senator in 2019. She is one of the richest senators and one of the co-owners of the Atlanta Dream women’s basketball team (Atlanta Dream).
Warnock of the Democratic Party was pastor of a church in Atlanta, and Martin Luther King Jr, a famous American civil rights leader, was also pastor of the same church.
How important are the Georgia elections?
The United States Senate is very important in passing the bill, and since 2014, the Republican Party has controlled the Senate.
In addition to having a significant influence on the passage of the bill, the Senate can also influence the appointment of important positions in the government cabinet, including the appointment of Supreme Court justices.
Democrats currently have 46 Senate seats, plus two independent senators who voted in unison with Democrats, for a total of 48 seats.
If Democrats win both Senate seats in Georgia, Democrats and Republicans will be evenly divided in the Senate.
But in reality, the Democratic Party can take control of the Senate because the Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party, Harris, as president, can cast a crucial vote in the case of a 50-50 vote.
Analysis by BBC North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher:
During the election campaign, President-elect Biden promised that he would vigorously implement many environmental, medical and economic policies after taking office.
Even if Democrats win both Senate seats in Georgia, forming a 50-50 situation for Democrats and Republicans, the policy promised by Biden may not go smoothly, because the relevant policies still need the support of the centrist.
But the increase in Senate seats for Democrats means Biden can more easily implement the bills he wants to pass and nominate the candidates he wants.
If the Republican Party continues to win two Senate seats in Georgia, then the Senate will continue to have a divergent legislative deadlock for the next two years.
How is the situation of the campaign?
The campaign between Loeffler and Warnock received more media attention because the two competed more fiercely and attacked each other more fiercely.
Loeffler accused Warnock of being an “extreme liberal” who followed Marxism and intended to cut the spending budget of the police department.
Warnock’s campaign strategy follows the line of the Democratic Party, focusing on epidemic prevention and medical policies. He received more support from African Americans.
According to the 2019 census, approximately 55% of non-Latino whites in Georgia and 33% are black.
Biden Harris’ partner was victorious in Georgia. This is the first time a Democratic presidential candidate has won votes in Georgia in 30 years.
Who is ahead of Georgia?
For the past several decades, Republicans have won the Georgia Senate, making the Georgia Senate election a tough battle for Democrats.
In the November vote, the two Republican candidates also got more votes.
But Biden succeeded in encouraging African Americans to vote in the presidential election and won the presidential election in Georgia.
This second round of voting began a few weeks ago, initially showing that the turnout rate is very high and may be the highest turnout in Georgia.
Opinion polls show that the approval ratings of the two groups of candidates are very close, and it may take some time for the final result after the vote is over.
