Suriname’s measures to combat the coronavirus will extend for 14 days. Surinamese President Bouterse has just announced this on television. The government is also deeply concerned about possible contamination in the border areas. This is due to the fact that people cross the border in secret.

“The situation at the borders worries us a lot. Reports continue to come to us that the border is crossed daily, ”DNV director Veira announced in the television address (below).

Despite the closure of the borders outside the checkpoints, people still manage to cross the street. The reality, according to President Desiré Bouterse, is that this gives us a keen insight into potentially thousands of infected cases. If these measures are not observed, a state of emergency will be declared in these border areas.

The measures to be extended:

  • The partial confinement, with the exception that people are not allowed to walk on the street from 8 p.m. at 6 a.m. the next morning, with the exception of care, security and traffic people essential to the job.
  • Meeting limited to a maximum of 10 people and a social distance of 2 meters.
  • All gambling and casinos remain closed until further notice.
