Get on the train around five in the afternoon, wait a long time on the white bed in the sleeping compartment and the train will start slowly. When the night darkened a little, the regular light and shadow changed outside the window and the slight shaking of the train, they would soon put Yan Hua in the wagon to sleep.

When he opened his eyes early in the morning the next morning, the train would take him to his hometown, Qiyang, Hunan.

This is a scene that Yan Hua, who works at the Shanghai branch of ByteDance, will go through every year when he returns home, but is gone this year. Due to policies relevant to epidemic prevention and control, he decided to celebrate the New Year on the spot.

It is very busy on New Years. The night before New Year’s Eve, he didn’t leave work until two in the morning, when the streets were already empty. All he could see on the way was the lamppost and its long figure being dragged away.

Before that, he had left work around midnight for three consecutive days. “They are all things that cannot be completed but must be promoted.” Yan Hua, who is in charge of the advertising business, said: “There may be dozens of indicators in hand. Even if they are all completed, they need to be analyzed and summarized, and a report will finally be formed.”

In fact, because Douyin has become the exclusive interactive partner of CCTV Spring Festival Gala, ByteDance is the protagonist of this year in the entire Internet industry. According to Yan Hua’s understanding, the Spring Festival red envelope project team will have to require employees to be on duty on New Year’s Eve. Generally, the company will offer condolences and compensation to these colleagues through management, which may include meals, red envelopes, gift boxes, etc.

For service departments that are not only necessary, the company only encourages employees to celebrate the New Year locally and does not provide some special benefits. However, the company gave each employee a Spring Festival red envelope based on the number of years of work, more than 1,000 yuan a year, more than 3,000 yuan in two years, and about 6,000 yuan in three years. In Yan Hua’s opinion, the year-end bonus after the first quarter may be more attractive.

Yan Hua really struggled before coming home for the New Year and even bought the tickets. But aside from the government and company that issue notices, more than half of my colleagues have spontaneously stayed. And what really makes Yan Hua feel like being left behind will not be alone. It’s a series of arrangements started by Bytedance’s “civil organization”: playing games, killing scripts, visiting scenic spots, badminton, farm … Basically, you can enjoy it in your hometown. Projects that arrive can also be arranged here.

On New Year’s Eve he got up early to clean the house and, after preparing a simple lunch, ran to his colleague’s house. In fact, this is not much different from an ordinary weekend party: four or five colleagues are together, giving the evening time to the glory of the king and preparing for New Year’s Eve together in the evening. It’s just that for these people who usually only talk about work, this is another opportunity for them to become more intimate in the dimension of life.

Yan Hua prepared several good local dishes, such as the fish head with red hot minced pepper. He made a video call with his family and introduced the people around him and the dishes on the table to two distant old men through the screen. “It is equivalent to talking about the New Year of the Cloud.” The biggest effect of the New Year of the Cloud is to make people on both sides of the screen calm.

This is definitely different than celebrating the New Year in my hometown. If you go back to Hunan, Yan Hua is usually busy a few days ago. Besides eating, drinking and having fun, he also set up fireworks on New Year’s Eve. “You have to order more than two thousand firecrackers.” After New Year’s Eve, they will also go to the suburbs to barbecue, grill, charcoal and meat Dishes and sauces should be the main focus of Yanhua. After the barbecue, the two old men, Yan’s father and Yan’s mother, would still pressure everyone to go to KTV together.

During the Chinese New Year, the company also organized the service people, but they only need to be online. Everyone decides who he is from the first day to the seventh day of high school. Yan Hua is in the advertising department, for many customers, the holidays are often times when the advertising effect is very good, so they must always be prepared to meet unexpected demands.

Once this type of demand arises, they must work with other departments to come up with a complete proposal from planning to product, and “do a number of things like data analysis.” But he also frankly said that nodes such as New Year’s Eve encounter unexpected situations Also relatively few.

In fact, she had already arranged the seven-day vacation for him. Get enough sleep at home before going out to see a movie. Starting in second grade, he will go to Chenghuang Temple and Yu Garden, places with strong flavor of the year. After coming to Shanghai for more than two years, he has not really understood the city in a real sense and it turned out to be an opportunity.

What’s hard to avoid is that no matter how lively you are outside during the day and at night, when you return to the rental house alone, there are only incandescent lights and carefully placed furniture around you, and there is still a trace of loneliness and coldness falling into his heart.

This situation is not uncommon after being adrift for more than two years. Generally speaking, the way you resolve your feelings of loss is to quickly go to sleep and then read a book. Let the words occupy the thoughts, and the thoughts will not have the strength to think of other things.

It is precisely because of this that Yan Hua has new visions about the local Chinese New Year. “For me personally, it can be seen as a kind of exercise,” he said, “exercising one’s ability to live independently and tolerate so-called loneliness.”

During the busiest time a year ago, the most important job for him was nothing more than making a New Year’s work plan. His goal in 2021 is to be able to improve his vision, thinking logic, and expression skills. “It may sound a bit imaginary, but this is all I really need,” said Yan Hua.

(At the request of the interviewee, Yan Hua is a pseudonym in the text).
