The new corona epidemic, which has plagued the world for more than a year, still shows no signs of abating. Brazil approved two vaccines for use, including the Chinese Kexing vaccine.
After the Pfizer vaccine was put to use in Norway, 29 people died. According to the Norwegian Medicines Agency, common adverse reactions can be made worse in frail older people.
Brazil approves two vaccines
The Brazilian regulatory agency Agencia Nacional de Supervisión Sanitaria approved on Sunday, January 17, the Oxford / AstraZeneca and China Coxing vaccines, which will be distributed in 27 Brazilian states.
Shortly after emergency approval from Brazil’s National Health Supervision Agency, Monica Calazans, a 54-year-old nurse in São Paulo, became the first person to receive the Coxing vaccine.
Earlier this week, researchers noted that in clinical trials in Brazil, the effective rate of the Chinese vaccine was 50.4%. The results show that this is much less efficient than the previous data shows, slightly more than the 50% threshold required for regulatory approval.
Before the vaccine was approved, a new variant of the coronavirus appeared in Brazil. Some cases date back to the Amazon region of the country, which has entered a state of emergency. The situation in Manaus, the capital of the Amazonian state, is particularly dire, with an insufficient supply of hospital beds and life-saving oxygen.
Brazil’s President Bolsonaro has come under increasing criticism for handling the epidemic. There were several anti-government protests in Brazil last week. Bolsonaro opposed the lockdown measures and previously blamed state governors and mayors for the new corona virus crisis, saying the federal government has provided all the necessary resources to deal with the virus.
According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University in the United States, the number of people infected with the new corona virus in Brazil is close to 8.5 million and the death toll exceeds 200,000.
29 people in Norway died after being vaccinated
Bloomberg reported that 29 people in Norway have died after being vaccinated with Pfizer / BioNTech.
The Norwegian Medicines Agency told Bloomberg on Saturday (16) that it has evaluated 13 deaths and 16 cases are under evaluation.
According to the Norwegian Medicines Agency, all reported deaths are related to older people with serious underlying illnesses, and most of them have had the expected side effects of the vaccine, such as nausea, vomiting and fever.
Previously, the Norwegian Medicines Agency stated that 23 people in the country died after the first dose of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. He has evaluated 13 of these cases, and the results indicate that common adverse reactions can make frail older people worse.
The director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency Sigurd Hortemo (Sigurd Hortemo) said that these reported cases show that common adverse reactions to mRNA vaccines, such as fever and nausea, can have fatal consequences for some frail patients.
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health believes that for those with the weakest health, the minor side effects of the vaccine can have serious consequences, and for those with a short life remaining, the benefits of the vaccine can be negligible.
Pfizer told Bloomberg that Pfizer and BioNTech are working with Norwegian regulators to investigate the death in Norway. Pfizer said regulators found the number of cases not worrisome and in line with expectations.
