It is understood that the CSS was started by the Institute of Sociology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 2005. It has lasted more than ten years and has so far launched seven surveys. The survey area covers 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across the country, and more than 10,000 households are interviewed in each survey.
