The Beijing Forum 2020 was held at Peking University a few days ago, with the theme “Civilized Harmony and Common Prosperity: New Challenges and New Opportunities for Globalization Under the Heavy Attack of the Epidemic.” Participants said that the “XIV Five-Year Plan” has clearly defined the development path and guided the Chinese people to the future, and on the international stage, China leads sustainable development and demonstrates leadership and responsibility.
China leads sustainable development
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said in a video speech: “Before the outbreak of the new corona epidemic, inequality and disagreement have been on the rise. This epidemic has also sounded the alarm over these persistent diseases. This means that we must return to it. On the path to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, China has always been in a leading position in this regard. China has combined its national plan with these goals to raise 850 million people out of poverty. This is the greatest poverty reduction achievement in history. “
In addition, he noted that achieving the sustainable development goals also means accelerating climate action. “China is committed to striving to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. I appreciate that.”
The “XIV Five-Year Plan” guides the Chinese people into the future
Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, said that the “XIV Five-Year Plan” has a clear development path and can guide the Chinese people into the future.
“We must make better use of the technologies of the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and new advances in genetic engineering.” Schwab said: “Only through the application of new technologies many of the problems can be solved. I am very happy to see that China attaches great importance to the development of technological capabilities in the fourth industrial revolution.”
In addition, he noted that we are emerging from the haze of the epidemic, and this also thanks to the leadership of China in the fight against the epidemic and the revitalization of the country’s economy. Now we have the opportunity to achieve the “great refactoring” that everyone urgently needs. I am very pleased to see that Chinese leaders have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
China shows leadership and responsibility
Irina Bokova, former Director-General of UNESCO and member of the High-Level Advisory Committee of the Beijing Forum, mentioned two important facts.
The first is the EU’s ambitious Green New Deal. Its content covers all aspects of economic and social development and is committed to making the EU the first “carbon neutral” region by 2050. The second is that China is striving to reach peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This is an important step in addressing climate change. China also calls on all countries to promote an ecological recovery of the world economy after the epidemic.
Bokova said: “Both things demonstrate strong political leadership and a sense of responsibility towards people and the planet.”
