The Vice Premier of the State Council of the Chinese Government in charge of Hong Kong and Macao affairs, Han Zheng, met with Hong Kong CEO Carrie Lam in Beijing on Friday (November 6). He affirmed the effectiveness of Carrie Lam in preventing and controlling the epidemic and enforcing Hong Kong’s “National Security Law”, and said the central government will strongly support Carrie Lam and the SAR government to “administer in accordance with the law”.

After the meeting, Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor stated that he had submitted proposals to the central government that he hoped to support Hong Kong in terms of preventing epidemics, economic recovery, and alleviating people’s hardships.

What did both sides say?

During the meeting, Han Zheng said that under the strong leadership of the central government, Carrie Lam has led the SAR government to overcome several difficulties this year, including preventing and controlling the epidemic, restoring the economy, implementing of the Hong Kong National Security Law and the maintenance of Hong Kong’s social stability. The central government fully affirmed its effectiveness.

At present, the Chinese government is formulating the outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan in accordance with the recommendations approved by the Fifth Plenary Session of the XIX Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Once the scheme has been completed, it will be presented to the National People’s Congress and the National People’s Congress next year for formal implementation. The Hong Kong government plans to publish its new annual “policy direction” within this month, which is expected to focus on the economy and innovation.
