A tank: a brilliant record

[Tarjeta de presentación]At the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution, a Soviet-made T-34 tank is parked in the exhibition hall on the ground floor. Under the spotlight, the breath of the years quietly faded, and it was mottled and solemn. On the front barrel, the six red five-pointed stars are particularly striking. There is a line of flashy characters on the comment board: “Heroic Tank 215”.

In the War to Resist American Aggression and Aid to Korea, Tank No. 215 destroyed 5 enemy M46 tanks, wounded 1 vehicle and destroyed 26 bunkers, setting a record for the number of enemy tanks destroyed by a single vehicle of our forces. armored.

In a synthetic brigade of the 71st Army Group, a pennant was hung on the wall of the company hall of honor where the “People’s Hero Tank No. 215” was located. The 16 characters “Bicycle combat ingenuity and brilliant enemy tank destruction performance” glowed brightly.

In June 1953, the Chinese People’s Volunteers launched the summer counterattack. In July of the same year, three US Army M46 tanks posed a serious threat to volunteers on high ground on the North Shixian-dong Mountain.

The Fourth Independent Voluntary Tank Regiment, Second Company, Second Rank, No. 215, accepted the task of “pulling out the nails” and supporting the infantry in capturing the enemy highlands. The No. 215 tank versus the M46 tank, if faced head-on, at a normal engagement distance, judging from team parameters alone, this is a showdown that is almost impossible to win.

When the tank encountered a large pit, one side of its track was suspended and the body bowed. Driver Chen Wenkui stepped on the gas and the tank hurtled through the well. But this also triggered the enemy’s consciousness, and fierce artillery fire came towards the sound.

Gunner Fengshan went out with artillery fire to guide the tank to the predetermined location. He quickly adjusted the turret and locked the armor on the side of the target. Commander Yang Aru gave an order. Tank 215 roared and armor-piercing shells were ejected one after another, and the enemy tank was immediately hit. Use it on fire.

On the night of the 10th, when the tanks were about to retreat, Shi Fengshan observed that two tanks appeared again at the enemy’s position, just within range. If Yang A ordered to fire, the 215 tank would be destroyed in just 11 minutes. With 2 enemy M46 tanks and 12 bunkers, the volunteers finally managed to control Beishan’s position in Shixiandong.

After the war, the Voluntary Army Headquarters awarded tank No. 215 the honorable title of “Tank Hero of the People”, and all the crew members recorded collective special merits.

For more than half a century, the “People’s Hero Tank No. 215” company has inherited and carried forward the spirit of “fearing strong, resourceful, flexible, brave and tenacious enemies, and daring to fight to win”, insisting on hang on to military training and not relax, and numerous heroes and role models have emerged. In 1987, the former Nanjing Military Region awarded the company the honorary title of “Model Company for Military Training” due to excellent preparations for military training.

Company commander Song Yuxiang said the company insisted on holding “Forum 215” and other company historical education activities as usual. Every time new recruits enter the company or the company participates in important missions, all the company commanders will stand in front of the 215 tank, relive the story of the battle and inherit the red gene. .

In August last year, the company went into a mountainous area in eastern Anhui to participate in an actual combat exercise. After officers and soldiers from across the company moved into the designated area from a great distance, they dug shelters and posted sentries overnight. Many soldiers had blood blisters on their hands, but none flinched. At dawn, the battle horn has just sounded. After almost six hours of combat, all the officers and soldiers of the company took the lead to plant the flag in the “enemy” position.
