The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (Agencia de Seguridad de Infraestructura y Ciberseguridad, known as CISA) revealed on Friday (October 30) that the hacker’s attack was intended to “influence and disrupt “the 2020 US presidential election.
Officials said that in late September, this group of hackers conducted extensive scans of state websites and then attempted to use these websites to obtain voter data.
Jermaine Roebuck, a CISA official, said the hackers used insecure misconfigurations on the site to compromise the voter database in at least one state.
He said: “We know which specific states were targeted in this operation and we are currently actively coordinating with these states to ensure appropriate corrective measures.
Federal officials said suspected Iranian hackers have been trying to use known software vulnerabilities to search for voter data. They did not specify which states were the targets of the attack. FBI officials said the attackers had already explored websites in 10 states.
Roebuck said that it is currently impossible to attribute all of these activities to the same hacker group. However, these attacks overlap on IP addresses, IP ranges, virtual private network exit nodes, and other technical data.
The investigation further exposed Iran’s intervention in the US elections. Previously, US officials publicly accused Iran of being behind the fake email attack by Democratic voters in Florida. The FBI and CISA noted that the attack and the spoofed email should be from the same Iranian organization.
US officials emphasized that there is currently no evidence that any attack has affected the voting process and they have assured voters that the integrity of the ballot is properly protected.
Prior to this, US intelligence officials and investigators from large tech companies also stated that global hackers are targeting the 2020 US elections and targeting campaign teams including President Trump and the Democratic candidate. Biden.
According to the “Voice of America” report, Russian hackers who intervened in the 2016 US presidential election also attacked the emails of Democrats in California and Indiana earlier this year. The same group of cyber spies also tried to invade think tanks in Washington and New York.
Microsoft said in September that the Chinese hacker organization codenamed “Zirconium” targeted people closely connected with the presidential campaign, as well as prominent figures in the international affairs community, including international affairs academics from 15 universities, and 18 Organization of international affairs policies, etc.
