A simple virus stopped the world: The new corona virus epidemic that is ravaging the world has deeply moved us all.
We have also been threatened by viruses before, and there have been pandemics, but the world has not closed cities due to every new virus infection, nor has it closed doors due to the flu season.
So what exactly is this new coronavirus? What is the uniqueness of its biological composition that represents a unique threat to our body and our life?
Disguise master
In the initial stage of viral infection, the virus can trick the body.
The new coronavirus may be very widespread in the lungs and respiratory tract of people, but the body’s immune system is completely unaware of it and still believes that everything is normal.
Professor Paul Lehner from the University of Cambridge in the UK said: “This virus is very sneaky. It can create a lot of viruses in the nasal cavity, but it makes the body feel good without responding.”
Once the cells of our body are retained by a virus, they release a chemical called “interferon”, which is a warning signal for other parts of the body and the immune system.
Professor Reiner said, however, that the new coronavirus has an “incredible ability” to turn off this chemical warning of the human body. “The capacity of the new coronavirus is so magnificent that you have no idea that you have been infected or sick.”
He said that by looking at cells infected by the virus in the laboratory, it is completely impossible to see that these cells have been infected, but the test showed that they were “tortured by the virus and desperate for life.” And this is just a “trump card” played by the new corona virus.
“Withdrawal after killing”
The day before the human body felt bad was also when the new coronavirus in the body reached its peak. But in fact, the virus has been active in the body for at least seven days, and at this time, the sick person must be hospitalized.
Professor Reinard said: “This is a very sophisticated evolutionary strategy: you do not need to rest in bed when you are infected with the virus, but to go out and have fun.”
In other words, the virus is like a dangerous driver who quickly fled the scene of the car accident, when we found out that he even died from it, he had already been transferred to the next victim.
Professor Reynal said that, in simple language, “the new corona virus does not care whether people are alive or dead”, “it is a virus that disappears as soon as it dies.”
The new coronavirus is in stark contrast to the SARS virus in 2002. The SARS virus is more contagious after people get sick, so isolation is much easier.
A new virus against which the human body has no defense
Do you remember the last global virus pandemic? In 2009, people were very alarmed by the H1N1 swine flu.
However, this virus is not as deadly as people expected, because the elderly already have certain protection mechanisms. This new virus is very similar to viruses that people have encountered before.
There are four other new human coronaviruses that cause common colds and flu symptoms.
Professor Tracy Hussell from the University of Manchester said: “Now this new coronavirus is new, so we don’t have a pre-immune mechanism against it.”
Professor Hassell said that this virus, officially known as Sars-CoV-2 (Sars-CoV-2), is new to “strongly impact the human immune system.”
The human body lacks resistance to this new virus, just as Europeans brought smallpox to the Americas and brought destruction to indigenous peoples.
For the elderly, it is difficult to develop immunity to a certain virus from scratch because their immune system is already slowing down.
Learning to fight new infections requires the immune system to constantly try to correct mistakes.
However, as age increases, the set of T cells produced by the body becomes less and less diverse and T cells are the central component of the immune system, so it becomes increasingly difficult to find cells that can resist the new coronavirus.
The effect on the body is extraordinary and unexpected.
The new coronavirus affects the lungs first and can affect the entire body.
Professor Mauro Giacca, from King’s College London, said that the new coronavirus is “unique” and “different from diseases caused by any other common virus.”
He said that this virus not only kills lung cells, but also causes lung necrosis. The infected cells were found to accumulate in piles and not function properly, so these necrotic cells appear to be difficult to remove.
Professor Kiaka said that after a bad cold, the lungs can “fully resume functioning”, but “this recovery will not occur” after the new coronavirus infection.
He said, “This is an unusual infection.”
The blood clotting problem of the new crown patient is very serious and extremely rare. There are reports that the doctor is unable to infuse the patient because the tube quickly becomes blocked due to blood clotting.
Professor Beverly Hunt of King’s College London said that the clotting chemicals found in the blood of some patients with the new crown are 200, 300 or even 400 percent higher than normal.
She said on the BBC’s “Inside Health” program: “In my long career as a doctor, I have never seen a group of patients with such thick blood.”
These body-wide effects may be due to infection with angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor virus. This receptor is found in all parts of the body, including the blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and lungs.
The virus causes inflammation in some patients, overloads the immune system, and damages other parts of the body.
Coronavirus and obesity
If there is obesity, the condition caused by the new crown is more serious and the greater the circumference of the waist, the greater the possibility of serious illness or even death.
Professor Stephen O’Rahilly of the University of Cambridge said that the relationship between the new coronavirus and obesity is something that we have not seen in other viral infections.
Fat covers all parts of the body, including the liver and other organs, and the metabolic disorder caused by the combination with the new coronavirus appears to have more serious consequences.
Once obese patients become infected with the new crown, they are more likely to have a high degree of inflammation in the body and lead to blood clotting.
