North Korean teens rescued many times
Luo Shengjiao, 21, never climbed back
By January 1952, the Yeonjo River in Seongcheon County, North Korea, had frozen over. That morning, Luo Shengjiao and his companions were practicing bomb-throwing by the river, and several North Korean teenagers were skating nearby.
Suddenly, a young man named Cui Ying accidentally fell into a 2.7 meter deep ice cave. Braving the severe cold of over 20 degrees below zero, Luo Shengjiao jumped into the ice cave. Under the water, Luo Shengjiao found Cui Ying and pushed him out of the water.
However, because the ice sheet around the ice cave was broken, the boy fell back into the water. After several setbacks, Luo Shengjiao exhausted his last strength and pushed Cui Ying out of the water again. In the end, Cui Ying was successfully rescued, but Luo Shengjiao never came back up and was only 21 at the time of sacrifice.
“When I grow up, I will be you”
North Korean Teen Joins Army and Visits Luo Shengjia’s Parents
In June 1953, the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea posthumously awarded the First Class National Flag Medal and the First Class Warrior Medal of Honor.
The North Korean people also changed the name of the place where Luo Shengjiao sacrificed to “Luo Shengjiao Village”, and the mountain where he was buried was also named “Ro Shengjiao Mountain”.
To compensate for the kindness of the volunteers, Cui Ying, a young man rescued by Luo Shengjiao, joined the Korean People’s Army and became a soldier like Luo Shengjiao. In 1954, Cui Ying also went to Xinhua, Luo Shengjiao’s hometown, to visit Luo Shengjiao’s parents.
In the 1960s, North Korea specially adapted and filmed the movie “The New Legend of the Boiling River” based on the exploits of Luo Shengjiao, which was later translated into Chinese by the Changchun Film Studio in China.

It affects the younger generation of North Korea
In July 2011, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the “Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between China and North Korea”, North Korea decided to name Shocang High School in Chengchuan County, Pingnan Province, where the martyrs of Rashen sacrificed their lives.
Today, the school has more than 330 students and more than 30 teachers. Teachers and students often learn about the exploits of Luo Shengjiao martyrs and regularly clean the Luo Shengjiao cemetery.
Director Kim Hye-il said that Luo Shengjiao sacrificed himself to save North Korean children who fell into the water. His deeds shocked the North Korean people. Luo Shengjiao Upper Secondary School represents the friendship between North Korea and China.
