Wang Yi delivered a speech at the high-level meeting of the international seminar to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations
On September 1, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a video address titled “Strongly Defend Multilateralism and Maintain the Right Direction of Human Development and Progress” at the High-Level Meeting of the International Symposium commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Wang Yi said that since the founding of the United Nations 75 years ago, the United Nations has advanced through trials and difficulties, vigorously promoting global development and human rights. World peace and stability have generally been maintained, new world wars have been avoided, and many local conflicts have been controlled. It has become the consensus of most countries to resolve differences through dialogue and negotiation and to mediate and resolve disputes through mediation.
Wang Yi said that for the next 75 years, the international community must act together to resolutely uphold multilateralism, maintain the right direction of human development and progress, and advance the cause of the United Nations to a new level.
Wang Yi made five suggestions:
One is to defend the central position of the United Nations. As the most universal, representative and authoritative international intergovernmental organization, the United Nations carries the desire of the peoples of the world for a better future, has unparalleled advantages and plays an irreplaceable role. In the face of increasingly complex and severe global challenges, multilateralism is the only option. As long as the majestic forces gather under the flag of the United Nations, there will be no obstacles to overcome and the future and the future of the world are bright.
The second is to defend the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. It is necessary to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to oppose frequent interference in the internal affairs of other countries. We must persist in the peaceful settlement of disputes and oppose the use or threat of force. We must comply with international laws and regulations, comply with international obligations, and oppose unilateralism and intimidation.
The third is to adhere to peaceful development. We must take full advantage of the important role of the United Nations and its Security Council in stopping wars and maintaining peace, abandoning the Cold War mentality, promoting dialogue and consultation, and seeking political solutions. The United Nations should continue to play a leadership role in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and addressing climate change, and promote the implementation of the “Decade of Action” plan of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Agreement on Paris. Support and assistance to developing countries is needed to alleviate the impact of the epidemic and promote the early realization of poverty reduction goals in developing countries.
The fourth is to adhere to win-win cooperation. We must take cooperation and win-win as a universally applicable principle, establish a new concept of win-win, win-win and win-win, and abandon the old thought that you lose, I lose, and the winner takes all. . The United Nations must be more democratic, effective and inclusive, and become a great stage where all countries, big and small, are equal, exchange and learn from different civilizations, and countries with different systems work together, instead of one stage. for conflicts and confrontations between countries and zero-sum games between great powers.
The fifth is to persist in building a community with a shared future for humanity. All parties need to be encouraged to seriously establish a sense of community, come together and cooperate, monitor and assist each other, and work together to address various risks and challenges. We must build a global partnership at the international and regional levels to jointly build a world of lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness, tolerance, cleanliness and beauty.
Wang Yi said that at present, a hundred years of change overlap the global epidemic, which has had a general impact on human society. The epidemic has shown once again that all countries share good and pain and that their fate is closely linked. We must make a decision: to unite and not divide, cooperate and not oppose, share responsibilities and not blame others. Mankind will eventually defeat the epidemic. The epidemic will change the world, but the issue of times of peace and development will not change, the general trend of mutually beneficial cooperation will not be reversed, and the trend of historical progress is unstoppable.
Wang Yi said that as the largest developing country and permanent member of the Security Council, China is actively practicing the lofty ideals of the United Nations and continuously promoting the great cause of peace and development of mankind. China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, a defender of international order, and a provider of public goods. China will firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and national dignity, firmly safeguard its own legitimate rights and interests, firmly safeguard international fairness and justice, continue to pursue a mutually beneficial and win-win opening strategy, share development opportunities with countries across the world. world, will faithfully comply with international obligations, strictly comply with international commitments and assume international responsibility in accordance with its own national strength.
Wang Yi said that five years ago, President Xi Jinping announced at the UN 70th anniversary summit that a number of important initiatives have been implemented to support the cause of the United Nations, working for the maintenance of UN peace. , the fight against terrorism, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, education and other fields. Provide support, boost global sustainable development and make significant contributions to the cause of women around the world. China will continue to fulfill its responsibilities as an important country, demonstrate its responsibility as an important country, make the contribution of an important country, provide more global public products, and contribute to the cause of world peace and development. China stands ready to work hand in hand with all parties to uphold and promote multilateralism, jointly promote the reorganization of the United Nations, and boldly advance towards the great goal of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
The seminar was jointly organized by the United Nations Association of China and the Chinese People’s Foreign Relations Institute, with the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for a Better Future”.
