BEIJING (Reuters) – China reported 61 new cases of coronavirus on the mainland by July 26, up from 46 cases the previous day, the health commission said on Monday, with new infections not involving people returning from abroad. reaching the highest number since early March.

Of the 61 new cases, about 57 were domestic transmissions, the health commission said, most since March 6 when 75 new infections were reported.

Of new domestic infections, the number in western Xinjiang region nearly doubled from a day earlier to 41.

Northeast Liaoning Province reported 14 cases, marking a fifth consecutive day of new infections.

Meanwhile, the north-eastern province of Jilin reported two new cases, the first since late May, involving people traveling from neighboring Liaoning.

China reported 44 new asymptomatic patients, up from 68 the previous day.

As of Sunday, mainland China had 83,891 confirmed cases of coronavirus, the health authority said. The COVID-19 death toll remained at 4,634.
