China has planted a flag on the moon, The BBC reports, Citing state-run media, following a country trip to the lunar surface this week.

The Global Times noted that the previous two Chinese lunar missions had flags on the craft coatings, instead of the actual flags on the poles.
The Chinese flag was first seen on the moon in 2013 during the country’s inaugural lunar mission, Chang’e-3, the newspaper noted. In 2019, the Chang-4 Lander and Rover brought the flag to the unpredictable part of the moon.
Project leader Li Yunfeng told the Global Times that the system used to fly the flag Features such as protection from extreme temperature differences.

In 1969, a U.S. soldier planted a flag on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission. It was the first country. Subsequent missions planted five other flags by 1972.
NASA quoted satellite images as saying that five flags were still flying in 2012, but experts said the sun’s glare had probably turned them white.
Astronaut Buzz Aldrin said the first flag was placed very close to the Apollo lunar module and was probably blown up when it exploded.
