The season of the expected return of Walter Montillo It couldn’t have been more bumpy, and it could end in the worst way. Something that for months was considered safe, in the last hours it became surprisingly complicated and now it is a concrete possibility that the blue captain does not renew with the club and does not continue for the next campaign.
All in the same week where another of the cases that most complicated Azul Azul was resolved very quickly: the renewal of Pablo Aránguiz.
But why are the two cases following such similar paths?
Change of plans
When Montillo was finally able to return to U after a decade away, The idea behind the steering wheel was that this 2020 would be the last of his career. In fact, the possibility of retirement was something that he had been seriously contemplating for a couple of years, but the Argentine did not want to close the door with the pending issue with the club that marked him the most.
All those plans, however, came to nothing as soon as the pandemic broke out. During the long break from the National Tournament, the squirrel became more and more open to the possibility of renewing for another year, especially due to the fact that he wanted his farewell to occur once the public could return to the stadiums.
For months, this desire to continue seemed an almost formal issue, since the club was also very interested in being able to keep not only the greatest symbol of the squad, but also who, despite his 36 years, became the most important player in the club. team.
All that began to change with the departure of Hernán Caputto – the coach played a key role in his return – and it became more complicated with the arrival of Rafael Dudamel. Not because the Venezuelan DT does not want it, but because he expressed his desire to first evaluate him physically and soccer. Something that Montillo considered a grievance, given his career and identification with the club.
As pointed out by his representative Sergio Irigoytía, the player wants to be clear as soon as possible to be able to order his family affairs, especially that of his children who are still of school age.
The economic factor
Dudamel’s idea of evaluating Montillo stands in stark contrast to Aránguiz’s case. The player trained in Unión Española, in fact, has not even been able to train with him, while recovering from the fracture he suffered in September.
However, the big difference lies in a commercial issue. The technician did not approve or comment on the renewal of Aránguiz, who will remain in the U until 2023 after buying 50% of his pass to FC Dallas of the US MLS.
In the club they do not believe that the steering wheel will be able to fulfill all of that agreement, and that is exactly the point. Ensuring the continuity of Aránguiz gives the club a future business card, considering that at 23 years of age he is already a national team and one of the players with the greatest projection of Chilean football and that if he continues like this, he could earn the U several million Dollars.
And although it sounds cruel, in times of public limited companies that type of factors sometimes predominate more than the mere football.
But despite everything, in the U they remain optimistic about Montillo and its continuity, although in the internal they recognize some annoyance because the issue has leaked in the media because, otherwise, everything could have happened without any controversy, and without the concern (and annoyance) that the fans have expressed once it was learned that perhaps the great reference of the team can leave without pain or glory.
