What if Maverick is Ford’s future anti-Toro pick-up?

As part of its new strategy on the continent, Ford prepares to launch new pick-ups and SUVs, while sedans continue to bid farewell to the assembly line in several countries in the Americas. As has been speculated for months, the oval brand is preparing to disembark in a completely new segment, that of compact pick-ups. The main objective, especially in Latin America, will be to take away the reign of the Fiat Toro, which together with the Renault Duster Oroch have imposed themselves almost alone.

During the last months, rumors have spread that the name chosen for the future Bronco Sport was going to be Maverick, a name that the brand made in the past to name one of its models. Finally, the new SUV saw the light unofficially but nothing was as some catalogs showed, at least if you thought about the future robust crossover. Now, a short time later, Maverick is back at the center of the scene after the project for Ford’s future compact pick-up began to gain more momentum. In addition, during the last time, the name was registered in some markets, while Courier and Ranchero also appeared as possible candidates for the determination.

The next oval pickup will be produced in Mexico, and according to TFLnow, sources close to the site have released an image with the inscription Maverick on the lid of the Detroit firm’s upcoming bet box. The compact pick-up was already seen at an internal event in the United States (see note) and is expected to reach the main markets in 2022. In Argentina, it is likely that it will arrive with tax benefits, due to the signed trade agreements. with the North American country (Mexico).

Ford compact pick-up

The platform of the future Ford pick-up (monocoque) will be the C2, which currently gives life to the third generation of the Kuga and Focus IV, although it will also be the same as the Bronco Sport, (see note) which will also be produced on Mexican soil. From an aesthetic point of view, some foreign media such as MotorTrend confirmed that the design will be inspired by its older sister, the next Ranger (see note), but in turn will have several components from the robust Ford (Bronco) family.

Some tests have already started and under the hood would have the same Bronco Sport engine with a 1.5 three-cylinder 180 HP. In addition, it could also adopt a 250PS four-cylinder 2.0 engine. The transmission will be an eight-speed automatic and will be offered with all-wheel drive.

What does Maverick mean?

Despite the fact that the oval brand already used this name in the 1970s and 1980s for one of the most successful models in the United States, the Maverick name will once again participate in a new vehicle from the Detroit firm. This name is carried by a sedan that served in North America to deal with the oil crisis. The different meanings of this word are: dissident, search for independence, rebel or radical.
