The company’s artificial intelligence manager showed several situations in which Tesla cars automatically stopped in time for pedestrians who unexpectedly appeared in front of the vehicle.
A video from the Tesla company, published this April 20 on the YouTube channel of the Matroid company, dedicated to machine learning, shows how the emergency braking function with autopilot allows Tesla cars dodge distracted pedestrians and avoid hitting them.
During the Scaled Machine Learning conference, which took place in February, the head of artificial intelligence of the American company, Andrej Karpathy, showed three situations in which pedestrians appeared before the vehicle from the side, out of the driver’s field of vision, but the Tesla cars stopped just in time.
Elon Musk’s company can capture and save those videos thanks to TeslaCam, its built-in test camera feature. “This car may not even have the autopilot connected, but we we continuously monitor the environment around us. We saw that there was a person in front and we slowed down, “Karpathy explained.
The engineer added that, with his system, Tesla has managed to avoid many similar accidents. “We see many of these [casos], between tens and hundreds a day, where we really avoid a collision; not all are really positive, but a good fraction of them are“he added.
Following the presentation, Karpathy explained how the automaker is applying machine learning to its system to improve it until it becomes fully autonomous.
