An increase of 210,925 delinquent people from March 2019 to the same date in 2020, is recorded in the XXVIII Report on Debt in Default, prepared by the San Sebastián University with data from Equifax and Mapcity. According to the study, delinquent debtors reached 4,815,695, which represents 4.6% more than in the same quarter last year.
The survey reveals the effects of the social crisis, incorporating the comparison with the number of defaulters in the last two quarters of last year. From December 2019 to March this year, the number increased by 1.7%.
“The figures reveal a growth higher than the trend observed in recent years, with a rate close to 5%. In the coming months, the negative effects on employment could exacerbate the difficulties to pay that people are experiencing, and their ability to meet debt commitments, ”explains Gonzalo Edwards, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the U . Saint Sebastian.
On the other hand, the average default in March of this year reached $ 1,887,930, 4% more than in December 2019. In addition to this, 59% of delinquent debt is in banks, while 20 % in retail. The incidence of community delinquencies is concentrated in the south-western sector of the capital, in communes such as San Ramón and Lo Espejo. “This situation could be exacerbated considering the importance of informal work in these sectors,” added the dean.
The regions with the highest average arrears are Antofagasta, with $ 2,594,487; Metropolitana, with $ 2,172,623 and Tarapacá, with $ 2,043,756.

On this occasion, as a way of measuring the repercussion of the pandemic due to the covid-19 on delinquency figures, the report includes a look at the situation in April.
The data concludes that last month the delinquent people reached 4,935,226, which means an increase of 2.5% compared to the previous month.
