President Sebastián Piñera arrived this Thursday until Maipú to inaugurate a new electroterminal intended for the operation of standard buses RED of the Transantiago.
The facilities with Copec service for the operating company STP will aim to, according to the president, improve the system of the public transport and at the same time protect the environment.
The total project had an expenditure of $ 80 million, 8 of which were used to build the terminal and the other 72 to buy 215 new electric buses Photon brand.
These electric vehicles will have a range of 300 kilometers, will travel the Alameda-Providencia trunk line and will benefit 600 thousand from the capital.
Piñera added that the 215 buses will allow saving 38 thousand tons of CO2, which is equivalent to what was captured by 2 million trees, which in turn corresponds to a forest the size of the commune of Santiago.
Currently there 11 operating electrical terminals in the Metropolitan region and the one inaugurated in Maipú is the second with the largest number of chargers (57).

In the activity, the president pointed out that there are currently 2,200 buses of the capital’s public transport with the RED standard, which among other qualities are the USB ports, WiFi and air conditioning in the machines. Of these, 776 are electric.
In addition, he announced that in the future the fleet will grow as today the result of the new tender will be known of Transantiago, which will allow the replacement of another 2,030 buses.
The president stressed that this new process will allow to have smaller business units and for shorter terms, which will facilitate the replacement of operators that are not fulfilling their obligations without affecting the quality of the service.
