Delta and American Airlines have stated that they are studying how to eliminate the central seats as a security measure to keep their distance and avoid contagions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Alexandre de Juniac, the director general of the world air association, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), states that if the European Commission requires in its regulations – which it is expected to announce next month – to release at least a third of the seats, ‘low cost’ tickets in the short and medium radius “will end”, as airlines will be obliged to increase their fares by 50% to “ensure a minimum profit”, especially low-cost companies, with margins by seat tighter than traditional.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary says in an interview with ‘Financial Times’ that if distancing measures such as leaving an empty seat are imposed, which he considers “absurd”, his airline “will not fly”. The executive assures that he has warned the Irish Government that “the State will have to bear the cost of leaving those rows empty”, since “we cannot make money with 66% of occupation”.
As posted REPORTUR.com, The airlines have already put their proposals on the table to face the changes that the coronavirus pandemic will bring. Empty seats to keep the distance or blood test are some of the measures (Airlines study to do blood test before boarding).
