Chiefs Chris Jones suggests he “won’t play” without new contract

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo made as direct a statement as we’ve seen regarding defensive tackle Chris Jones and his contract status on Tuesday during “NFL Total Access.”

GARAFOLO “[Chris Jones] he always saw himself as a guy over $ 20 million a year. Frankly, the Chiefs never did, even before the whole COVID situation, they never made an offer north of $ 20 million. [They] they felt like they could get him somewhere underneath. There’s a lot of work to be done here if there’s going to be a long-term deal for Chris Jones, who was disruptive during the regular season and then in the postseason, had pressure in the Super Bowl that led to an interception. This is a guy who has put up production in recent years to deserve long-term treatment. However, I am not sure it will happen.

Jones, seeing the story, tweeted from his official account.

Whoa there

Jones spent some time offseason with New York Jets running back Le’Veon Bell, who was out for the entire 2018 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers due to a contract dispute.

Garafolo’s note almost directly disputes that of his colleague, James Palmer, from just four days ago. Palmer’s note suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic was playing a major role in the heist.

The conflicting reports are likely the result of the two sides (the Jones and Chiefs representation) continuing far behind in compensation for a new long-term contract. Jones likely felt he was worth at least $ 20 million a year before last season, then led the team in sacks and played a key role in the Super Bowl comeback.

The Indianapolis Colts traded for defensive lineman DeForest Buckner, then agreed to a four-year deal worth $ 21 million a year solidified that floor for Jones’ camp.

Here’s the underlying problem with it all: The Chiefs are simultaneously working on the richest contract in NFL history for their quarterback during a pandemic, while Jones presents more than fair case for the annual average he’s looking for.

The probable result

The July 15 deadline will pass without an agreement, and Jones will eventually sign the franchise tag to win $ 16.1 million. The terrifying part of that for the Chiefs is that it seems like things are not going well behind the scenes and Jones can stay out until Week 10 if he wants to. Jones hinting that he will not play Tuesday night means he will probably not be in a hurry to rejoin the team.

You may eventually choose not to sit down as this is a new contract year and you will want to give yourself the best possible chance to cash in … again.

The Chiefs could re-tag Jones after 2020 and then try to transfer his rights to another team for premium draft compensation. Unless something changes and the Chiefs or Jones double before July 15, this will be Jones’ last year at Kansas City.

Keep in mind that a long-term agreement would be a drastic change depending on what happened. Neither party has moved in more than 13 months; It is not reasonable to think that it will happen in the next 14 days.
