Chicago violence: 5-year-old girl stabbed in second bloody week


A 5-year-old girl was stabbed to death during the second bloody weekend in the city of Chicago on Saturday morning, resulting in 49 people being shot, including seven fatalities, reports say.

According to CBS Chicago, the young woman, identified as Sirenity Arrington, was stabbed several times and died shortly after being taken to a local hospital. Neighbors in East Garfield Park tried to help the girl, while her mother, Simon Aust Stein, 27, was charged with first-degree murder in her death, the report added. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Police have also launched an investigation into the murder after a woman’s body was found in the Chicago River on Sunday morning, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The woman was in her mid-20s.

Gun violence in the city began Friday night when a 19-year-old man was shot in the back and chest while walking. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The next morning, a 17-year-old man was reportedly standing in an alley in a different part of the city and was approached by two men. He was shot in the upper torso at about 11:10 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, NBC Chicago reported.

In another shooting targeting teenagers, a 17-year-old man was seriously injured in a drive-by shooting in Englewood on Sunday morning, while a 15-year-old man was attacked in the leg after approaching a vehicle later that day. South Coast, police told the Chicago Sun-Times.

On Sunday night, a 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital in Englewood with a gunshot wound to the head.

A 42-year-old man was also shot in the back at a rally in South Shore early Saturday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The newspaper says the men killed in the weekend shootings were men between the ages of 15 and 66.

Last week, gun violence in Chicago killed 10 people and injured 35, he added.
