Chicago shooting, 50% murder in 2020; Cook County breaks total death toll from gun violence, says opioids, COVID-19, medical examiner

Chicago (WLS) – 2020 was the deadliest year in Cook County.

Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during this time, while CVD-19 is also being blamed for contributing to a large number of deaths due to gun violence.

At the age of 18, Nassie Minifield just graduated from high school and had her life ahead of her until she was shot and killed on Halloween.

“I’m not really right,” said Donna Minifield, Nasini’s grandmother. “I’m numb, I’m sad, I’m sad.”

Minfield was among 875 people killed by gun violence last year, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office fee; 78% of the victims were black.

“It’s the most gun-related homicide so far. We only got close to it when we had a homicide in 1994 due to gun violence,” said Natalia Derevynny, a spokeswoman for Cook County Medical.

“I watch a lot on TV and I’ve seen a lot of innocent children – children are killed and I would never have imagined in my life that I could feel the pain they feel.”

For years was not the only record-breaking death in gun violence. Cook County also recorded a total of 16,049 deaths in 2020, a record.

Those numbers were driven by the 8,192 people lost due to COVID-19 infection deaths.

Epidemic stress is also thought to be a contributing factor to the number of hiccups during an unprecedented year.

Chicago police also released the 2020 Final Crime Number, which shows that shootings and homicides have increased by more than 50% in 2020.

In the year 2020, mur69 were murders, which is compared to 495 murders in the year 2019.

Speaking of shootings, the city had 3,261 LGs last year, a big jump of 2,140 shootings in 2019. The number of victims in the shooting reached 4,033 in 2020, up from 2,598 in 2019.

This is a celestial year for violence after three years of progress, in which many innocent children were killed and some police were also targeted.

About a quarter of the killings took place on the west side.

City leaders and a new Chicago superintendent of police were forced to deal with civil unrest amid the COVID-19 epidemic, in which several community policing strategies were implemented, among other tactics. But police say the overall crime rate has dropped.

Superintendent of Police David Brown is promising reform when it comes to increasing community involvement and strengthening investigations.

“I think our savior will be the COVID vaccination,” said Dr. Trauma Chief of Cook County Hospital. “I think people are fed up with being indoors and what they can’t usually do.”

Another thought-provoking statistic is the all-time high number of deaths from opioid overdoses reported by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office Fees. M.E. According to him, there are 1,599 confirmed cases so far, and there are about 500 pending toxicology results.

“Indeed, our greatest fear was, you know, indeed, you know, imagined – that we’ve only seen the number of opioid deaths in a very troubling way,” said Dr. Steven Ax, ER Physician at Cook County Hospital . Toxicologist.

But behind all the statistics, there are real families who have lost loved ones and who are grieving. These families take the pain of 2020 into the new year as they hope for healing.

About 12 minutes into the night, Chicago police said a man and a woman were sitting in the living room of a home when a bullet struck them from outside.

The shooting took place in the 8700 block of South Buffalo Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The condition of a 1-year-old man is serious and he has a gunshot wound to the head and a 1 year old woman has a grazing wound to the head. Not in anyone’s custody.

A 41-year-old man was killed in Chicago’s first New Year’s slaughter.

Police said he was driving in the city’s Bronzville neighborhood at 47 at night and someone started shooting.

The man was shot in the throat and his car crashed.

In a statement issued Friday morning, Superintendent Brown said:
“2020 has been a complete storm.

Public safety is an all-day effort for which not only the police, but also street activists, trust leaders, courts, community organizations and residents all work together. The criminal justice ecosystem, however, was heavily affected and disrupted by the global coronavirus epidemic and the death of George Floyd.

The increase in fatal shootings and killings is not unique to Chicago, as many major city presidents and law enforcement officials are battling unprecedented levels of violence across the country. Our Chicago police officers faced unprecedented circumstances in the face of an increase in violent crime, a health epidemic when faced with an extra time of civil unrest and robbery.

Our officers themselves have also been victims of violent crime, as the number of shots fired at CPAD officers has increased by 558% since 2015. January. 1, from 2020, in 2020 officers officers officers were shot, in which 10 officers were shot.

Since the rest of our city and nation are involved in the global epidemic, the Chicago Police Department has also reported more than 2,450 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the department. Unfortunately, four of our CPD officers fell victim to COVD-related illnesses.

During the summer, we have built our Crime Fighting Strategy for a citywide approach to the deployment of resources in areas experiencing high levels of violence. This strategic shift has had a positive impact on public safety and slowed the pace of monthly killings that accelerated in the first half of 2020. We have also dedicated more resources that will promote our drug investigation at mid-level and high-level. Drug dealers, who have proven to serve as the main drivers of violence.

The best way to reduce crime and violence is to build bridges and trust in the community to prevent it in the first place. At the unit level, from detective bureaus to community safety teams and critical event response teams across the city, community engagement has become a central component of our public safety approach. These include the Rollin ‘Rack Events, held over the summer in partnership with the Chicago Parks District, with the upcoming release of the Police Athletic and Arts League in 2021. We also expanded the Neighborhood Policing initiative from two to five districts this past summer and will expand to additional districts in 2021.

As we close a turbulent year and prepare for 2021, our department’s vision for a safer Chicago will be embedded in a five-pillar strategy for radical strategic change: Growing Community Trust, Transformational Change through Reform, Officer Welfare and Public Health. .

The Chicago Police Department has a moral duty to respect the dignity and sanctity of human life. That pride and respect should be reflected in every aspect of how we can function and factor in every aspect of our organizational culture.

Finally, I would like to say how proud I am to be associated with the men and women of the Chicago Police Department. No matter how difficult, no matter the risk, they are on duty day and night to serve and protect this great city. ”
