It may not be the original location, but Cheers at Faneuil Hall has spent the last few decades as a destination for countless tourists – and, like so many other restaurants, will soon close its doors for good.
In a press release, Cheers founder Tom Kershaw announced the closure, announcing that August 30 will be the last day of Faneuil Hall’s pub.
“Cheers Replica Bar has had a wonderful 20 years in the iconic Faneuil Hall Marketplace, one of America’s most treasured historic landmarks,” he wrote. ‘I’ve been dealing with a lot of downturns and upticks in the economy over the last 20 years, and by the way, Cheers Replica Bar at Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been in business. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with no assistance from our landlord (Ashkenazy Acquisition Group), has made this current challenge unpredictable. ”
Ashkenazy Acquisition Group did not immediately respond to a request from Boston.com for comment.
Kershaw indicated that the original Cheers location in Beacon Hill, which he opened in 1969 as the Bull & Finch Pub, would remain open. The pub was the inspiration behind the long-running television series ‘Cheers’, and has a gift shop with memorabilia.
Hampshire House, which owns Cheers along with 75 Chestnut and 75 restaurants on Liberty Wharf, sued its insurance providers – Fireman’s Fund Insurance, Associated Indemnity Corporation, and its parent company, Allianz Global Risks United States Insurance Company – last month over denied business interruption claims. According to Hampshire House lawyers, the insurance companies refused to pay the claims on their “Property-Gard” policy. The lawsuit estimates that Hampshire House has already lost several million dollars.
