Chase Elliott is the NASCAR Cup Series Champion.
Elliott had the best car in Sunday’s title race on the Phoenix Raceway and easily reached the first series title of the Cup over Brad Kaselowski, Joy Logano and Danny Hamelin.
Elliott Logano, 24, went through to win the race and traveled to the championship with 42 laps, as the challenge of the three drivers he was running for the title could not come close to advancing. Elliott led 153 laps; Most of any driver.
The championship is Eliot’s first and his father Bill will make him the first driver to win the Cup Series title in the same season since 1988, where he was selected as NASCAR’s most popular driver. Chase Elliott has been NASCAR’s most popular driver for the past two seasons and is the shoe-in for the third straight.
Elliott had to start on Sunday after failing to check his car several times from the back of the field. But he quickly moved forward and took the lead for the first time on 46 of 312 lap races.
Kasolowski was second, while Logo was third and Hamelin fourth. Elliott’s teammate and seven-time champion Jimmy Johnson finished fifth in his final NASCAR Cup series starting as a full-time driver.
Elliott’s number was fluorescent yellow in honor of Johnson on Sunday. And that young driver broke down in tears in his car as he realized he had become the champion of the Cup series.
The Elliott family is the third father-son duo to win the Cup series. Pattis was the first with Lee and Richard and Dale Jarrett joined his father Ned Jarrett when he won the 1999 Cup Series title.
It was clear to Eliot that the reality of becoming a Cup series champion was sinking, then he climbed out of his car in front of his grandparents.
“To win and lock the championship, these are the moments you can only dream of,” Elliott said. “It simply came to our notice then. I just hope I never wake up. ”
After he got out of his car, Elliott met his car owners, Rick Hendrick and Johnson, at the same time. Hendrick is the most winning owner in NASCAR history; He has built championship cars for Terry L. Bonte, Jeff Gordon, Johnson and now Elliott.
There was no match for Elliott
Logono was ahead of Elliott in the final stages of the race as he previously dug to take advantage of fresh tires. But Elliott quickly ran it down and the pass for the lead looked easy.
It was the custom of all after that. In the end, Elliott’s victory span was more than three seconds as the other three title contenders wanted a late caution flag for a chance at the start again. It wasn’t even a crazy wish. The title races for the Truck Series and the Xfinity Series resumed twice on Friday and Saturday nights. But there’s no reason to be wary by NASCAR on the last 100-plus laps of Sunday’s Cup series race.
The win was Elliott’s second straight and fifth of his season. He made it to the final four by winning the final race of the third round at Martinsville. The win ensured he would be a competitive part of the title race, but knocked Kevin Harwick out of the playoffs. Harwick was the winning driver in the series in 2020 with nine wins.
