Chaos erupts at Shanghai airport after mass COVID-19 test order

One of Shanghai’s international airports has fallen into chaos after authorities ordered a mass COVID-19 test for workers in response to a small cluster of cases between cargo handlers.

The Guardian reported that Fung showed people in Hazmat costumes trying to contain insects at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Sunday night, as a parking lot in a parking garage was overcrowded at a temporary coronavirus testing center.

According to Xu Jun Long, vice president of the Shanghai Airport Authority, more than 17,700 employees working in cargo-handling terminals tested the virus.

So far, none of the 11,544 people whose tests have been returned have tested positive, Xu said.

Officials said two cargo handlers clearing the container, which had just arrived from North America, had undergone mandatory testing.

Sun Xiaodong, an official at Shanghai’s Centers for Disease Control, said the tension in both cases came from North America.

Neither of the infectious workers wore masks while cleaning the container, which was sealed and had moisture inside, Sun said.

“Research at home and abroad shows that coronaviruses can live in closed, humid environments.”

The National Health Commission said China detected and detected 11 new cases on Monday, including two local cases in Shanghai.

However, health officials said they found no link between airport cases and the most recent cases.

Officials say more than 86,000 cases have been reported in the country since the epidemic began, including at least 6,344 deaths.
