CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD told a group of reporters in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on Monday that if everyone wears face covers for four to six weeks in the United States, the COVID epidemic- 19 in the country could be brought “to the ground.”
“I think it’s important to emphasize again, you can’t emphasize too much, that the tires actually work,” said Redfield. “It is our best defense to prevent us from contracting this infection.”
Redfield continued: “If we all covered our faces for the next four to six weeks, I think we could bring this epidemic to the country, so I hope they will continue to put more emphasis on that.” . “
“I just want to make a few points of emphasis that obviously I think people realize that this is the biggest public health crisis that we’ve had to respond to as a nation in over a hundred years and it’s really a marathon, not a sprint. Redfield said, addressing his comments on the face liners.
“One of the most important things we have in response to this outbreak right now, as we await the development of important countermeasures, particularly an effective and effective vaccine, is to fully embrace public health,” he continued. “And the most important aspect is that I try to remind people that we are not helpless against this virus, we actually have some of the most powerful weapons you could ask for.”
In addition to urging the public to wear face covers, Redfield emphasized the importance of maintaining “hand hygiene” and “social distancing.”
Redfield’s comments come as the number of COVID-19 cases in the US reached over 3.3 million cases this week with more than 135,000 succumbing to the disease.

ROBERT REDFIELD, CDC DIRECTOR: I just want to make a few points of emphasis that, obviously, I think people realize that this is the biggest public health crisis that we have had to respond to as a nation in over a hundred years and it’s really a marathon, not a sprint.
One of the most important things we have in response to this outbreak right now, as we await the development of important countermeasures, particularly an effective and effective vaccine, is to fully embrace public health. And the most important aspect is that I try to remind people that we are not helpless against this virus, that we actually have some of the most powerful weapons you could ask for. And the most powerful weapon we have that I know of is wearing face covers when you’re in public. Therefore, we ask the American public to fully embrace the use of face covers when they are in public.
The second thing we have is the importance of hand hygiene and the third is the importance of social distancing. These are not just words, they are very powerful public health tools. And then we can combine that with traditional public health measures that we have used for decades of early case identification, contact tracing, isolation. But the most important thing I can ask the American public to do is to fully embrace facial coatings, fully embrace careful hand hygiene, and fully embrace social estrangement.
And the last thing I will say before answering questions is that I also call on the American public to commit to protecting the vulnerable. For most under-45s, this virus will not cause significant morbidity or mortality, but those of us who have significant medical comorbidities in the compartment, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, chronic lung disease, and we become Elders, particularly those over 65, with these comorbidities, this virus can cause a major illness that requires hospitalization, including death.
I think it is important to emphasize again, it cannot be overemphasized, that face coatings actually work. It is our greatest defense to prevent us from contracting this infection.
If we all put on a covered face for the next four to six weeks, I think we could bring this epidemic to the country, so I hope they will continue to put more emphasis on that.
