Originally planned for as early as April 2020, CD Project has delayed Red Cyberpunk 2077 twice as it continues to spray and polish all aspects of its RPG. And with only three months left until the November 15 launch, the studio is taking some aspects to the wire.
In an interview with VG247, senior gameplay designer Pawel Kapala stated that the team is still working on the first-person melee system, stating that they are not yet “100% happy” with their implementation.
“We spend a lot of time trying to perfect this, and we’m actually not 100% happy, mostly with visual feedback about the hits, on the melee,” Kapala said. “That, we’re still working on it.”
Visual feedback is crucial in melee combat. Properly tuned, it can be the difference between a big swing feeling like connecting to a weighty target or just cutting through thin air as skew numbers come up. Finding this balance in a game where combat is determined by role-playing game stats is tricky because you want the player to feel powerful while also keeping up with their current weaknesses.
It’s a problem that many games were before Cyberpunk 2077 wrestled with, but Kapala is sure that the extra time the studio itself has given will be enough to nail it. He concluded by saying that the system that was presented to journalists a few months ago had already drastically improved.
CD Project Red recently released the second Night City Wire stream for Cyberpunk 2077, showing the three different prologues you can play, as well as a distribution of many of the game’s weapons.
