SYRACUS, NY – A small group of coaches’ wives, family members and friends of the program stood outside the Career Dome with signs of appreciation for the 1-8 football team as they got off the bus on Saturday morning.
The campus was already empty due to the novel coronavirus. No one was allowed in the building – not even the head coach’s wife. This small group includes the Senior Day Festival before the final home game of the season, which everyone wants to forget has been an unforgettable year.
Syracuse entered the game on a six-game losing streak, being shot last week by a team that lost for the first time since Boston College in 1972. There have been many less bright spots in the season full of laziness, the precedents were similar to the 2020 touchstone images.
The state of North Carolina made another physical, at the end of the 36-36-9 defeat.

With 24 seconds to play in the game and just 7 yards away from the SU potential game-tying score, Rex Kalpar ran around the field hoping that the achieved goal would come out. When he had no timeout, C Lapper pressed fourth with just a few seconds left on the clock and dramatically ended SU’s best chance with his first win in two months.
As the SU approaches the finish line at Notre Dame next week, its most cherished quality is becoming one of the two ACC schools to survive the end of the CC, without being sidelined by a covid related issue. In the college ledge football season, defined by postponement and cancellation, the SU has hung its hat on a small consolation: we’ve played it all.
The much-needed amount to stick to this bumpy trip two days after Thanksgiving. No one outside Central New York will celebrate this team. It will be written in the annals as the worst records in the history of the school. And for one more day, SUA let us forget about it all – until the biggest omissions of the year.
The defense haunted NC State’s quarterback in four sacks and safety in the first half. Orange came out of 12 special teams and defense from 22 first half points. Freshman Trevor Penano’s 98-yard kick-off return score was SU’s first since Dorian Graham against West Virginia in 2011.
In the first half of the next, Cornback K Efeatu Melifonovu delivered a penalty shoulder to CJ Riley into the air and into the hands of Michael Jones, who returned it to the 5 yard line. Syracuse settled for a short field goal. The defense was later forced to safety when NC State quarterback Bailey Hawkman threw a pass behind the final zone to avoid a sack.
Syracuse made his biggest lead since the Georgia Tech game on Sept. 26, winning just this season, and hitting a 60-yard touchdown pass in the offense and a fierce firefight, more offenses this month. Taj Harris starts for a 13-yard score.
SUA took a 22-14 lead at halftime and could not beat the lead until the beginning of the fourth quarter when Melphonwoo gave a ball to give NC State a 33-29 lead before a failed two-point attempt. .
From there, it was a march to a mostly familiar end, bolstering the NC State run, chasing the end-around with his 6-foot-3, 265-pound transfer defensive lineman from Penn State and taking a slight surrender from the top. To move the ball towards the midfield, Harris tip-toed the inbounds deep with 4 minutes left in the game.
He threatened a late game that might have turned into a hopeful storybook for everyone when he got off the bus more than four hours earlier.
Instead, one miserable season turned into one last cruel before it ended.
