CBS will honor comedy legend Carl Reiner with an hour-long colored special. The Dick Van Dyke Show – Now in vivid color! A special tribute to Carl Reiner, will feature two consecutive colored classic episodes of the beloved 1960s series on Friday, July 3 at 8pm on CBS.
The special features of the episode “Coast to Coast Big Mouth”, in which Laura Petrie reveals a top secret on a national television show, revealing that comedian Alan Brady uses a toupee. The episode won an Outstanding Emmy Award for Writing for a Comedy Series in 1966. In the other episode, “October Eve,” a painting by Laura comes back to haunt her when, despite having posed fully clothed, the artist (played by Reiner) takes the liberty of “taking his clothes off”.
Both episodes, written by Bill Persky and San Denoff, aired on CBS in two The Dick Van Dyke Show – Now in vivid color! specials produced by Reiner on December 11, 2016 and December 22, 2017, respectively. The episodes were hand-selected by Reiner for inclusion. As creator of the series and co-star, Reiner personally oversaw the original coloring of the episodes.
Reiner died of natural causes Monday at the age of 98.
Turner Classic Movies will also pay tribute to Reiner on July 28 with a marathon of his films like Oh God! Where is dad? and All of Me, among others.
