Cavan Biggio explains why he knelt during the national anthem

Ahead of Friday’s Blue Jays-Rays game against Tampa Bay, Cavan Biggio was one of four Toronto players who knelt during the American national anthem.

Astros Hall of Fame member Craig Biggio’s son joined teammates Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Anthony Alford and Santiago Espinal on his knees. Biggio said part of that was about supporting his good friend Alford.

“When I showed up at the ballpark today, I really didn’t plan it,” Biggio told reporters after the Blue Jays’ 6-4 win. “(Anthony) Alford’s locker is next to mine here. And I know he really wanted to do it, but he was hesitant to do it because of the situation he’s in on the field. You know, he’s an up and down guy, not a headline. And I said, ‘Hey man, if I did, would you feel more comfortable doing it?’ And he said, “Yes. So, that was my thought process going through that. I just wanted to show support not just for a teammate, but for someone I consider a brother. I was proud to do it with him. I think everyone we can agree that there must be a change and I’m just trying to do my part. ”

Alford, 26, has just 55 at-bats in the majors.

Biggio, 25, who starred in St. Thomas High School, had a great night, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.
