The Philadelphia Eagles made some scratches on the head when they selected Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. While Philadelphia had just one practice camp with plenty padded, Reagor made a strong first impression.

Reagor opened Monday with the first-team offense, on the “X” up, because Alshon Jeffery is on the Physically Unable to Perform list and JJ Arcega-Whiteside is “day-to-day” with an injury with lower body. The Eagles’ rookie immediately looked in sync with starting quarterback Carson Wentz, a strong sign of things to come before the onslaught for new looks.

“It’s been a lot of fun working with Jalen. He’s an explosive athlete,” Wentz said at a conference call following the Eagles’ practice on Monday. “You can see that with his route-running ability and his presence on the field. You turn on his highlight tape and you see what he does with the ball in his hands – and that’s one thing we have not been able to see. , of course, just keep practicing and live nothing. “

Wentz was finally able to see how Reagor looked in a full-blown practice, three weeks behind schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic that delayed the start of training camp for all 32 teams. Reagor was fluently breaking out of the route and showed the explosiveness that the Eagles thought when they selected him in the first round over Jefferson. Reagor struggled as a point-returner, muffing two points, but he and Wentz seem to have their timing down already.

“I know what he brings as a threat to the defense and he has really noticed things,” Wentz said. “He always listens and is always jealous of why we do things a certain way or how I saw a certain play. And that’s the type of thing I look for as a veteran, to look for these young guys who really want to learn. Those who really want to grow and want to be great.

“I see that in him and I see an extremely bright future in him. I am excited to help him become the player he dreams of becoming.”

Wentz threw a lot of passes across the middle to Reagor, an indication of how the Eagles plan to use him in the beginning. Of course, the game book will be opened to showcase Reagor’s explosive downfield as camp continues, but the Eagles are working on making Reagor a reliable player for Wentz on Day 1.

It’s been a decade since the Eagles had an explosive playmaker at a wide receiver in his rookie season. Reagor demonstrates similar characters as DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin in their practice for rookie training camps with the Eagles.

When Philadelphia fans told everyone who was ready to listen, both wideouts worked out well.

“He has the swag of a big-time receiver,” Eagles wide receiver Aaron Moorehead said. “He’s a powerful man. He’s fast. He has good hands. He’s really started putting things together, and it’s a good thing. And it will only get better.”
