Cardinal Pirates series postponed; The outbreak of St. Louis’ COVID-19 continues

The shutdown of St. Louis Cardinals due to a COVID-19 outbreak will continue at least Wednesday, with the announcement Sunday that this three-match set this week against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium has been postponed.

St. Louis has played just five games – none since July 29 – and this series that concludes brings the team total to 15 postponed games.

“In light of the latest positive test results, MLB and the Club believe it is prudent to conduct additional tests while players and staff are in quarantine before the team returns to play,” Major League Baseball said in a statement Sunday.

The Cardinals have tested at least nine players and seven staff members positive for COVID-19 and manager Mike Shildt said there were “a few visits to the ER” between the players and staff.

St. Louis is scheduled to play a double header on Thursday against the Tigers in Detroit – makeup for postponed games on Aug. 4 and 5 – before traveling to Chicago over the weekend for a three-game series against the White Sox.

When the Cardinals return to the field on Thursday, they will go 15 days between games and will have just 46 days to play the remaining 55 games on the schedule.
