Car enters Manhattan protest, strikes six – NBC New York

A car rammed into a group of protesters at a Manhattan intersection on Friday afternoon, police said, and officers were questioning the driver.

According to police, the incident took place just after 4pm on the corner of East 39th Street and Third Avenue on Murray Hill. There were about 40-50 protesters in the area at the time, police said, and six people were struck, a police source told NBC New York. None of the injuries are considered fatal.

A protester protesting with the group said the event was held in solidarity with the hunger strike at the Bergen County Jail in New Jersey.

According to two law enforcement sources, protesters surrounded the driver’s car, tapping and beating him. Panicked, the woman apparently rushed forward to flee, beating protesters in the process, police said.

A NYPD spokesman said officers were on the street with protesters, assuring no cars would come to East 39th Street. However, the car the woman was driving was parked halfway down the closed block, which eventually led to a conflict.

Both the driver and the passenger woman were at the scene and police are interrogating at the scene. No charges have been filed yet, but an investigation into the incident is still in the early stages.

On Twitter, NYPD Urged people to avoid the area “Due to a vehicle collision involving several pedestrians.”

Law enforcement sources said a protester was arrested at the scene for obstructing a police investigation.
