Captain Falcon’s voice actor in Super Smash Bros. was hoping to re-record the 20-year-old lines when he was called to the studio, but instead made muffled noises

During the “Mr. Sakurai features an ARMS fighter” which finally revealed that Min Min would be the 81st challenger for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the first new character in Fighters Pass Vol. 2, Masahiro Sakurai stated that the development team invited Ryō Horikawa, the voice actor for Captain Falcon in the Super Smash Bros. series, to … make muffles for the revealing trailer for Min Min.

Interestingly, Sakurai also mentioned that Captain Falcon is the only fighter from the Nintendo 64 entry from Super Smash Bros. who has not re-recorded their lines (when characters like Yoshi are excluded as they only use pre-recorded assets). Ryō Horikawa recently commented on this in a recent video upload and PushDust1n provided a translated synopsis.

“When he was called to the recording studio, he thought he would re-record his lines, but instead he recorded sip sounds,” said PushDust1n. Captain Falcon and Kirby were seen enjoying ramen bowls prepared by Min Min during the trailer.

Despite being a Japanese man, Captain Falcon is only expressed in English in all versions of Super Smash Bros. Familiar phrases like “Falcon Punch” are not expressed in Japanese even if you change the language of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the menus.

There is apparently a reason why Captain Falcon only speaks English during the Super Smash Bros. series. Ryō Horikawa continued to explain this in his video.

“He says when he recorded ‘Falcon Punch,’ he was told that it would also be the voice used worldwide,” PushDust1n continued. “So they thought Captain Falcon should speak English in the original Smash 64. So Horikawa worked to say his line in English and not with a Japanese accent.”

Since Captain Falcon’s voices have been recycled since Super Smash Bros. 64, this means that this tradition of Captain Falcon speaking exclusively in English has carried over to later entries in the series.
